The purpose of television is to sell the audience to the advertisers. They make $200,000 a minute for airing commercials. The job of advertisers is not just to hold our attention with jolly tunes and splashy colours but to persuade us to change our attitude and behaviour.
The most widely depicted drug on TV is alcohol. Heavy drinking is showing 40% of the time and alcohol itself 80% of time. Adulatory and prostitution account for 70% of all the prime time programs. 17% of the time there are people with mental illness. So what happens to people, especially children when they watch so much alcohol consumption, sex and insanity?

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Newton N. Minow spoke to convention of the National Association of Broadcasters on May 9, 1961 about Television. Minow said,
ReplyDelete"But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland.
You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons. And endlessly commercials — many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you'll see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, I only ask you to try it."

Babies who watch TV are more likely to have delayed cognitive development and language at 14 month. Babies who watched 60 minutes of TV daily had developmental scores one-third lower at 14 months than babies who weren't watching that much TV. When kids and parents are watching TV, they're missing out on talking, playing, and interactions that are essential to learning and development.

A few people watch TV to get their mind off things. This is their justification, they have been studying or working all day so when they come home, they want to relax and get away from it all - the stress, the anxiety etc. I don't have a TV but I may youtube cartoons occasionally. The fact that even cartoons are filled with plenty gunk symbolism aside, I have noticed that TV is just not an escape from the day's work, TV in general (cartoons included), numbs the brain. Watching TV shuts the brain down. After you switch it off, notice how your thoughts are incapacitated. Its like hypothesis, you can't decide what to do afterward and if you had something previously planned, you can't remember. Your mind draws a blank for a good several minutes.
ReplyDeleteSo for the people who watch TV for several hours everyday, no wonder they have trouble concentrating in real life. They can't focus in school or they are neglecting their families (especially fathers who just watch TV after they come home from work). They even mirror the actions they see on the screen because they have been programed to believe that this is what real life is and should look like. For example, who many men have accepted all women should look like Barbie doll because of TV? The men who would lower their gaze, are desensitize to seeing scantily dressed women because they watch too much TV at home.
So from normal and simple living, TV addicts switch to abnormal and hyper life. Always looking for an opportunity for violence, romance or drama.
Notice how they find everything in the real world - boring. Everything is painfully dull. But sitting in front of the tube and they are enthralled for hours on end.
True, the heart needs its rest and its moments of leisure. We cannot study or work around the look, it simply isn't human. A person can do something recreational. Like go the gym, play a game of football with siblings (or children, if you are married). Clean the house (which is what I should be doing right now). Write on your blog (which is what I should do often). Better - go volunteer at some place, meet and help those in need, this will give you more joy than any cartoon or comedy movie.
