What is Faith? Part 1

Faith is often misunderstood as being simply believing for something. But faith is much more potent than that. It is defined in the Quran as a verb; an action that is being carried out, a perpetual occurrence and state of being. Therefore, faith is not to merely confess that Allah exists but to live in such a way as if we can see Him; it is not only to recite the Qur'an but embody its teachings and prepare for the Akhirah as we prepare for the weekend.
In other words, Faith is the unshakable, spiritual foundation upon which Muslims establish their lives. It is the well from which springs our character.
Q. Where does the inner, emotional part of faith come from?
Ans. First, basic knowledge of the Qur'an and Hadith is required to have some Faith.
Faith is an enthusiastic, even passionate, dedication to someone or something. For Muslim women, Faith is a selfless affection given to Allah. This kind of Faith may often start out as simply a choice to become consciously Muslim. A new.y conscious Muslim probably won't know the Book of Allah, or even know the first thing about Allah other than He just promised us Paradise if we obey Him. But as the believer continues to pursue Allah, to dig deeper into His Book and search out His commands, we can begin to get a clearer picture of Allah's Magnificence and Grandeur. As the Qur'an impresses upon the believer's heart, the Greatness of Allah, our Faith increases. As our Faith in Him increases, our trust and submission to Him solidifies and gains permanence.
Devotion to Allah gives a Muslim woman her purpose, even her identity. It produces in her a willingness to serve Allah, not just in public but also in her personal life. As she adopts the commands of Allah in every part of her life, Faith begins to shine through her, making her a means of guidance for others. This is how Allah intends for Muslim women to live.

Second, since Faith is a verb, by definition, it necessitates action and many times it is experienced when it is FOLLOWED by action. A sister may wait for her faith to become strong in a determined manner before she starts praying Salah or reading the Qur'an. She may wait for many months and still feel empty from the inside. This is because Faith grows with actions. The only way she can feel close to Allah is by taking the Hand of Allah. Even if she has very little faith, when she remains persistent in praying regularly and when she she challenges herself to be attentive to the meaning of the Qur'anic verses she recites daily, inshaAllah her Faith will blossom.
