Surah Kafiroon - Highlights

They were not saying that we reject your god. If you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they would swear and def. say Allah. Their crime was only shirk. So Allah calls them Kafiroon. They were just compromising but still this stern name is issued against them.  Although they were doing shirk, their years of refusal, denial because kuffar. They disbelieved in their own conscious (our souls testified to the oneness of Allah).
Kuffar is also denial of a blessing. They had this favour of having a messenger from amongst them, reading to them a revelation in their language and he is mercy to all the worlds and he is debating with them in the most beautiful way (debates are usually ugly and nasty). Still they did not listen.
Making Da'wah is like sales, you are trying to get others to take this product from you. If the salesman is desperate, so the customer make some bargain. Throw some discount and give some free stuff on the side. So Allah is saying no you (s.a.w) are not desperate, in fact you don't even respond to them, I will respond to them قُلْأَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ
Your cemented Kuffar. You were, are and will be in disbelieve. Their fate is sealed, there is no hope for them. This is referring to a specific group. He exhausted his efforts on you (s.a.w) and you didn't budget then the only description left for you is this.
This indicates that the time of da'wah is done.

This Surah is not for every person.

لَا أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ
I do not worship what مَا pathetic things you worship. Such lowly things. I disassociate myself from them. These dead, defunct objects are pitiable. I will never worship them.

Your religion is only for you, it is never ever going to be for me. Between you and I there is never going to be an exchange. I am living this town.
These ayaat are the precursors of hijrah. So if he said (s.a.w) that the door are closed, he has given up his citizenship and declared war on their gods, there is no reason for the prophet (s.a.w) to stay in Makkah anyway.

لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ
Exchange, government, necessitates an authority. People get exactly what they deserve and what they own.
So your judgment is only for you. Hellfire is only for you at this point. My judgment, special one with Allah is only for me (s.a.w). So let's see who comes out on top.
They are not going to collide with words but now the swords will clank. There is a conflict embedded in this ayaat. In order for the prophet's mission to be complete, the idols from the Ka'bah have to go. It is part of his prophethood to purify the House only for the sake of Allah. So you keep doing what you are doing and I will do my Deen that I am doing and lets see who is overcome.

دِينِ - it is not deeneee but deeni
It is emphatic, to show desperation, to cry. It means exclamation.

Surah Lahab - Highlights

Allah has never dedicated a particular Surah anywhere in the Qur'an except in this way for this enemy.
So why such emphasis given to this enemy? The placement of the Surah. How come it comes in this order, after Surah anNasr and before Surah Iklas.

He is the one of the most famous and wealthiest and political powerful and good looking. Abu Lahab is his nick name. It means a flame that is red, it flickers with this glow. It denotes beauty and handsomeness. He was the treasurer of Makkah. He held the status of a celebrity. He is the grandson of Hashim. Lineage was important to the Arabs.
Her nickname is Umm Jameel, she was gorgeous. The daughter of the tribe leader. The couple is looked up to because of their nobility, their looks, their wealth. They are a Class-A couple.
He was the next door neighbour of prophet (s.a.w). He would throw trash, dead animal skin when he would hear prophet (s.a.w) praying or reciting. His sons also married the daughters of prophet (s.a.w). His son Utayba also spit towards him (s.a.w). He (s.a.w) made duaa against him and Abu Lahab was paranoid. So he won't believe in his message (s.a.w) but will be afraid of his duaa.

تَبَّ Destroy little by little. Die a slow and painful death. Car accident is an immediate death. That is halaak. The Arabs would ask, are you young or are you being destroyed? Your eyes and ears don't work the same way anymore. Your back bends. Your hair falls. You lose teeth. You are gradually deteriorating.
He and everything he does put to waste and destroyed. His plan to stop the prophet (s.a.w) failed. The hired two men to fight in badr, they lost. He told his sons to divorce his (s.a.w) daughters, and they both married Uthman (r.a) and lived happily till their death. His wealth and sons were or no use to him. His wife also died terribly.
يَدَا He grabbed a rock to hit the prophet (s.a.w). so that is why his hands were cursed. he also said to prophet (s.a.w) that may your hands be detroyed so his deen and dunya were destroyed. He is called by this nick name because he will always be in fire, flickering and hot red.
Allah says that may he be destroyed and he is in fact destroyed.

وَامْرَأَتُهُ
the purpose of marriage is to create more harmony. Two individuals, families come together in harmony. The upshot of that is the human race is at harmony.  Only means through which humans can procreate legitimately. When any of this is missing, Allah calls them imra-a. They have kids but they are evil wife and evil husband who are a good tag team, destroying the harmony of society.
حَمَّالَةَ - she does it a lot as if it was her profession. In hellfire she will do the same.

Surah Ma'un - Highlights

Also known as Surah Deen
What excuse is left that they would go against the Deen and lie against the messenger (s.a.w).
Did they not see how Allah pounded His armies? You want to reach the same state and be destroyed? Not only are these people committing shirk but they are so obnoxious to other human beings.

Allah is asking us to think and be open minded and reflect upon the reality around us.

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ
الَّذِي - refers to someone in specific. Could be Abu Lahab, because he was the treasurer of the money coming into Makkah. He was at a very good position to deny the orphan and the needy.
Lying against someone, make them en enemy, call them a liar.
دِّينِ = pre-Islamic Arabic, it meant payback. To return a loan.
If you are convinced that there will be consequences, you will think about that action at least twice. So we understand this as part of our nature. You may call it  an eye for an eye,, tit for tat. But we all understand this concept of justice, to get what one deserves.
But people want to bury that idea, lie against and don't care about it.
Denial or resurrection is the reason for disbelief and all forms of corruption. It is very easy to believe in a God but this idea of pay back for what we do demands we change ourselves. This is too harsh of a reality to accept so people escape it and say no no, there isn't any religion. What do people do to escape reality? Play video games instead of getting a job. Just party everything and not think about tomorrow. That is so moronic.

Proof is that they push the orphan around, someone who doesn't have a system. When a parent is lost, it feels very terrible, like the ground from underneath their feet is taken away. Their world and shelter is their mother and father. Imagine how many times they call their parents. You away from them for 2 seconds, in the same house and they get worried and cry out for you. So what kind a despicable human being would push this miserable baby around who has no one and is already in such a sorry state. How heartless could this person be who oppresses a little child. Anyone who denies the Day of Judgment, mercy is removed from their hearts. They have no care or regard for anyone else. Allah defends the orphan a lot.
يَدُعُّ - push him away from his own rights. they are doing an offense against him from the money that he deserves.
Islam calls for public services and politicians serve those with the biggest pockets because they were product into pocket by the rich not the poor so they don't bring the rights of the poor.

وَلَا يَحُضُّ This is what the politicians can do. They can take the mic and rally the people. But he doesn't do that. His presentations and speeches go to fill his pockets and molest the poor.
طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِي - food is the right of the orphans, it belongs to him. it is the food of the needy.

your prayers are hallow to begin with. if you are like that the orphan or needy than you are the worst type of worshiper. nothing comes out of it except some cardiovascular activity.
Salah should be hte priority in life. Salah first and left and death after.
They want to show off in their salah. they pray in public spots, elongate their qiyaam only when someone i watching and then discuss it with others to be known as really spiritual and deep.

سَاهُونَ - to abandon the salah because it is not important to him. if he prays or doesn't pray, it is not important for him. when he is planning his university schedule, a trip, a salah is in between, he easily skips it.

Crime against Allah and crimes against people are intertwined. If you are good to people you have to be good to Allah.

وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ - They are that cheap that they forbid water. They can't see a smile on someone's face. They cannot do even the littlest good to anyone.

Surah Nasr - Highlights

This Surah had a very deep and profound impact on the life of the prophet (s.a.w). More than 100x istighfaar and increase in qiyaam (nawafil) until his feet swelled and cracked = all these narrations are of after this surah was revealed. This Surah was revealed when a lot of people were becoming Muslim, his mission was complete and he was instructed by Allah to wean himself away from people and back to Allah.
This Surah is a guarantee of the victory.

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ  إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا
Tasbeeh means to glorify Allah, declare His perfection. Say that He is above and beyond any flaws.
Hands - praise and gratitude to Allah.
Declare Allah's perfection because all praise and gratitude belong to Allah. He is the One Who is in charge, Who gave you victory.
إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا - He it is He no doubt continuously accepting of repentance.
Past tense used, Allah accepted the tawbah of the Bani Israel in the past. Accepted the tawbah of far worse and bigger criminals. Accepting Islam is tawbah from shirk, and ignorance. Allah has been this way and will be always.
There was purification of the House of Allah from the idols, so purification of the hearts is called (inside cleaning).
You would expect that Allah would say be grateful. But here Allah says no no give credit to Allah and humble yourself by asking Allah's forgiveness. Remove and kill the idol of arrogance in your heart with istighfaar.

the more noble you are and more dignified you are, the more shriveled up you feel when someone curses you. The Prophets have the softest of hearts and cleanest of hearts. And they had to go back again and again and make da'wah to them. Put up with their arrogance and attitude. This is the conversation they have to engage with them. So in this Surah Allah tells the Messenger (s.a.w) that your mission is done, and now he gets to go back to Allah, be with Allah forever.

إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ
جَاءَ - stronger and tougher
نَصْرُ - rain comes and relieves it of its dryness. Help against oppressor, when army is being defeated. Additional military support. Very big and very heavy, meant to overpower (help someone against someone else).
He has the help of Allah on his (sa.w.) side. He (s.a.w) is not going to compromise (Surah al Kafiroon) because he is only an ambassdor of Allah's religion. Allah will defend.
فَتْحُ - it i a clear victory. No draw. No 49% victory. It is a decisive victory. Both sides know who won. The help of Allah is the only reason you get victory. Sometimes it comes in battle, by means of sakeena when they are doing something. So the help of Allah has to come first then comes victory. Help of Alah i.e. that is to say victory.
At the conquest of Makkah, the only celebration being made is the worship of Allah. Even the Messenger (s.a.w) enters in the state of sajda, the first thing he does is clean the house of Allah. Its very unique.
يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا - you will see them enter Islam. The very people who were refusing for so long and those you don't even know, will embrace it before your eyes and you will be pleased.
النَّاسَ  - One who posses intellect as opposed to haiwaan. Those who didn't enter Islam, they are animal. bande da puttar. They will come as a group. They are coming in not because of logical reasons, sometimes they just followed their family, their tribal leader. Because everyone was embracing Islam, because it became so popular, they decided to follow and do the same. If Islam makes it in your heart then it will remain inshaAllah but if was handed down to you, generation after generation then it is possible you will fall into doubt and become non-practicing.

How to do istighfaar: glorify Allah, say He is perfect. Praise Him. Acknowledge your mistakes. Make istighfhaar, Allah will accept it. What a gift. Allah says, apologize to Me now, He will relent upon you.

Perfect the way you do tasbeeh and hamd of Allah. Better and better your way, the way you pray salah, the way you do dikhr of Allah.

Surah An-Nas - Highlights

رَبِّ - The One Who ensures growth, the One Who Own and is the Master in charge.
The Owner, the Authority, the One Who takes care of. Sets in the right direction, Gives Guidance, Shows the right way, Grants gifts (He doesn't owe us anything, He is not obligated to do anything for us). He is the One ensuring the existence of the subject.
People turn to their parents, to their teachers, police or president of their country but really there is only one إِلَـٰهِ Who should be turned to and Only He can answer needs.

النَّاسِ - Pharaoh called himself rabb, malik and ilah. While in this Surah we acknowledge and submit ourselves to Allah Who is Rabb, Malik and Ilah. Though shaytan recognizes this fact too, he wants to make us forget when we raise the gaze, when we raise our voice, forget over the weekend that we have a Master.

إِلَـٰهِ - To incline towards someone, to be constantly obsessed about someone, thinking about them. Includes worship and obedience.

وَسْوَاسِ - to whisper something that is bad. Repeatedly whisper. The extreme whisperer, obsessive, compulsive whisperer. This is what he is and what he does. He has earned this title. He is doing it now and he will continue to do it (shaytan). You better be ready and mentally prepared because he is never going to stop.
خَنَّاسِ - one who steps back. Shaytan steps back when you remember Allah and he races to you again with a whiper when you  forget Allah, do some sin. Look at his persistence, this is his living. Possession happens to people who are party all the time,  have music blasting in their room, don't clean themselves after using the bathroom, don't care at what they look at. It is open invitation to Shaytan, vacancy for the shaytan. There is a reason why we need to be in state of wudu, sit down and urinate, lower the gaze. Then our youth is constantly angry, the recitation of the Qur'an hurts them, they want to turn it off, they cannot stand it. Shaytan gets to us through fahshaa. The chat, the lunch, "i am just giving her dawah" are all part of his master plans to lead you to terrible sins and ultimately kuffar and shirk.
فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ - sadr is a place (qalb is a thing). The heart is a castle and around the castle is some real estate. Shaytan is hanging out in the real estate, but if you let him in the heart, he will stay in. Now shaytan has his work on DVD, he uses puppets to get to us.

Surah Falaq - Highlights

Whose protection are you seeking and against whom are you seeking it? Who are you escaping?
Surah Falaq It deals with the actions of the creation of Allah, they are beyond our control, we are victimized by them. While Surah Nass deals with the evil acts within ourselves that we are responsible for. There is more desperation in the latter Surah because there is a greater danger.

6th or 7th year after Hudaibiyyah - the Makkans are not the biggest threat to Islam anymore. When Muhammad (s.a.w) made a peace treaty with the pagans
Labeen bin 3Asim, from the Banu Zuraiq. He claimed to have accepted Islam but at best we can say that he was a hypocrite. The Jews of Khaybr solicit his help because he was a magician. He was master sorcerer of the time. He paid the jewish servant boy of the prophet (s.a.w) to get the prophet's comb (s.a.w). He takes the hair from the comb and makes a device, attaches the prophet's (s.a.w) hair. He cast the spell on the device and hair and hide it under the well of  Dhu Arwaan and put a rock over it. The Prophet (s.a.w) would feel it psychological burden. He felt being squeezed from the inside. He would forget what he had done, didn't do. He was physically and emotionally agitated. But it was not something anyone else could see. It was a physical experience.

ijarah - to give protection to someone against an enemy that you can seen. But protection from an enemy that cannot be seen is isti3aadha.
Ma3aadh - place where you find refuge (yusuf said ma3aadh Allah).
أَعُوذُ - I am giving myself up and entering in the fort of protection. I have no prower to protect myself, I am submitting myself to Allah, I letting Allah do that.
فَلَقِ - to rip open something when something else comes out. Like you tear the pillow and the fluff come out. It refer to the morning, the day break and rips through the darkness. When a seed rips open and a plant comes  out. All of creation, includes all that Allah made because it came into existence by breaking its outer shell. Spring tears from the earth, rain rips through the cloud, children come out of the womb of the mother. The big bang was an explosion. Even microscopic creature split and multiply into many more. Allah is the Master of birth, the birth of rain, of spring water, of life. Allah is not born and He does not give birth but He owns the act of birth. He needs know one and everything is desperate and turns to Him to satisfy their needs. This Surah is a practical manifestation that we all need Him.

Being put into psychological fear, night, magic, jealous. So when Allah says فَلَقِ it is like Allah rips through our problems. He tears open our constriction and gives us relaxation.
Magic is a darkness of shirk. Tawheed is noor/light. The word for all kinds of shirk is dhulumaat - darknesses. Dark is synonymous with evi. He has a dark personality, dark intentions etc.
So you call on the lightness of the day to rescue you from all the darknesses that exist. If we really want Allah to protect us then we must be in obedience to Him. Enter not only the protection of Allah but also His worship and obedience.

شَرِّ - something that can harm. Every creation of Allah has an element/potential harm in them.
really dark with clouds. Harms that come in night. Watch the documentaries of what happens on friday غَاسِقٍ and saturday night. The potential of evil is far superior at night.
وَقَبَ so dark when things become invisible. We cannot see them (shayateen). Magnetic pull of the full moon has affects on the human being. Humans become more violent. People do experience aggression because of certain cycles of the moon. That is where lunatic comes from. Don't hang out at night, curb that behaviour and get rid of it. Who are the kinds of people you see late at night at the resturant. How awesome is your fajr going to be if you stay awake and out all night?

النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ - ones who blow over and over again, trying to produce this magic in knots.

حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ - this is the root of the problem. Why do people cast spells, why are they violent and fight and cause harm? They are jealous. Jealousy strikes the Muslims within the house/family. The FBI get calls like 100x Muslims snitching on other Muslims saying xyz is a terrorist and that person is like their in-laws or in their competiting business vendor.
When you have jealousy, its only a matter of time that you will act it out. So don't even have jealousy in your heart.

Surah Ikhlas - HIghlights

Last 7 Surahs were all about the Seerah of the prophet (s.a.w). Abu Lahab, the worst enemy of the messenger, is  served up. When a conflict has been going on for a long time, people forget what they were fighting about. So it is important that after the victory, you remember the agenda of the battle and the conquest.

surah maryam ch:19 v:88-90
It is a blessing of Allah that the sky and the earth is still maintained because of Tawheed.

The pagan arabs asked him what is Allah made of, metal, gold, sliver. So this Surah was revealed. So the Surah is هُوَ  He is....
اللَّهُ - ilha One to Whom people desperately turn. The One to be worshiped and obeyed.

أَحَدٌ - There isn't a single one else. Absolutely no one at all. It is used in negation. The one there is no second. The One for Whom any entity which is comparable, equal, partners possible. There is nothing like Him. He has no pair or affiliation.

الصَّمَدُ One you turn to in time of need. Someone as your goal. Aspire to meet them, reach them, please them. This is why the Surah is called Ikhlaas - sincerity. No one is above in status. Has no blemishes or faults in Him. Cannot be overcome in battle. Great in terms of His glory.
Solid with no holes or emptiness inside. Pure and absolute and concrete without any flaws. The One Who everyone needs but He needs no one Himself. He is Gracious and Merciful.
Abu Lahab thought he needs no one and since he is the treasurer, everyone needs him. He worshiped himself. He said, curse this religion, you think I will become equal to these people. He thought that he was alone.

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
He didn't father anyone, nor is He fathered Himself.
You give birth to your own, cat begets a cat.
Giving birth or being born implies that you have a beginning an end. So we do not associate this with Allah.
What is the disease of the heart? Saying that Allah has a son has a psychological affect. If your boss is a really strict, your manager is a cool guy and he is your cousin. So you let your manager deal with the boss. So when we do shirk, we assume that we make someone close to Allah happy and they will intervene for me. Just make the son happy and he will take care of the father. To cover their haram business, they cannot fess up to Allah so they donate their haram earnings to this guy in the grave who will hopefully make your case before Allah.

We learn to completely give ourselves to Allah. It rescues you from sadness and depression. You can take your problems to Allah. Always go and you will always get.

Surah Kauthar - Highlights

الْكَوْثَرَ - al khayr al katheer. It is the river in Paradise. A river where we have to stop on the Day of Judgment before we enter Paradise. here are so many aspects of khayr in just the way Prophet (s.a.w) is mentioned in the Qur'an. Allah calls him "servant", Allah swears by his life. Allah comes to his defends and answers, threatens the enemy. The Qur'an is easy to memorize. Professor Jereral Derx does not believe in the historical accuracy of the Bible. Watch him on Deen Show. The fact that the Qur'an is memorized and never changed over 1400 years is proved that was and never will be changed, even if written text is is manipulated, some surahs are deleted or translation is skewed.

He has just lost a child (s.a.w) and Allah is saying that no you have gained a lot.

إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ
wahaba - to give a huge gift. To get tranquility from your spouse and children is a huge gift from Allah because a vast majority of people are not happy in their households.
yu'tee- given and can be taken away, it comes with responsibility.
أَعْطَ - to give it to him because of you are so happy because of their obedience. It means we already gave it to you meaning it is guaranteed for you. It is your's for sure. It is a done deal.

شَانِئَكَ - how filthy can this person be? how cutoff from humanity can he be. He would boast about what the prophet (s.a.w) doesn't have, his lack of wealth, his lack of backing. So Allah beings the Surah says that do not let anyone ever doubt, Allah has given you more than they can imagine, lots and lots of it. Allah comes to calm down the messenger (s.a.w). This is also the gifts of Allah. Allah knows how the messenger (s.a.w) is feeling, hurt, sad, insulted. Allah knows already, his chest becomes tight from what they say. They were celebrating the death of his child and now he has to go back and give da'wah to him. Imagine his rage. So Allah comes to console the Prophet (s.a.w).

In Surah Tawbah, Allah does not begin with His mercy but ends with the Prophet's mercy (s.a.w). This surah is so vicious in its antagonism against the kuffar, they only have 4 months left. Their Bible is full of passages where god is angry with them and punishing the disbelieving people who are going against the messenger. So before the punishment comes, let the people have 4 months to decide. Let them hear the message and let them decide on their own. They have options. Is this not mercy and justice? He freed the world from oppression of all sorts and bring the changes at every level. Find a political system or election campaign that delivered better than his. How business was done, how women were treated. Political, ethnics, how people dress, eat and sleep and drink changed over 23 years. It as a revolution that swept peacefully. This has never happened in history.
The miracle of the prophet (s.a.w) is one we can hear and see. It is timeless.

Surah Fil - Highlights

Sometimes the criminals don't realize if they are addressed generally. So in this Surah, the Quraish are pointed at directly and told YOU, mind yourself, fix yourself. Don't think about anyone else, this is exclusively for YOU.
The punishment that could crush you and smother you is showcased in this Surah. The army of Abraha became eaten/chewed up corn.

Islam became an ideological conflict a social conflict and a political and military conflict. The conflict takes place in Makkah. The founder of the city is Ibrahim. His duaa is that which allowed for the city to even exist. This duaa occurs in 2 places: Surah Ibrahim and Surah Baqarah. For a society to be healthy and to function you need peace and prosperity and that is what Ibrahim (a.s) asked for. Free from social and political disturbance, tranquil, calm etc and flourishing financially (in material terms). Interestingly he makes this duaa only for believers. In other words, he is like O Allah let the kuffar starve, I don't care about those. The same thing was implored by Nuh (a.s). He wanted the generations of the kuffar to go extinct.
Now the Arabs have this universal pass, they live in a prosperous city, they enjoy all sorts of fruits (people come from all over arabia to Makkah for trade because it is the center of worship) and they can travel without free of attack because they hold respect for this custodianship of the Ka'bah. So they are being exposed in this Surah. Allah's abundant favour upon them and their blatant disregard to tawheed. So Allah is saying you are not the family for whom Ibrahim (a.s) made duaa for. You are the kuffar that ibrahim was praying again. So Allah is drawing the line between those who are good vs. those who are bad. It explains why the Muslims are different and why they can no longer join the ranks of Quraish.

Ussay3 ----------> Abdu Manaf --------> Hashim (465, flood is 450), Abdul Muttalib, Noufal, Abdul Shams
Because of the flood in Yemen at 465. There is an economic vacuum in Arabia. So Hashim goes to Sham, Sends Abdul Shams to Habasha and Noufal to Iraq. He goes to every neighbouring Empire to do trade to use Makkah as a trading port after Yemen. All Arabs had respect for Makkah because they accepted that Makkah was a religious capital, it has a House built by Allah. So they tried to use it for economic strategic advantage. لِإِيلَافِ is trade agreement.
Hashim has a son named Abdul Muttalib who has a son named Abdullah and he gives birth to Muhammad (s.a.w)
Christians on the other hand were in Rome. They had a massive empire touched Syria, parts of Turkey, Africa, even parts of Yemen and Ethiopia. They were predominately christian with some pagan exceptions. Yemen revolted for some time and became Jewish. During this time, the Christian (Muslims) were persecuted and the incident of the people of the ditch (Surah Burooj) takes place. One man survives and runs to the Christian king in Ethiopia for help who returns the man with 2 of his trusted generals and an army that crushes the Jewish rebellion. The generals reconquer Yemen and dual for leadership over Yemen. Abraha, one of the two generals wins and becomes the Yemeni King. In honour of Najjashi (the Ethiopian King), he builds a cathedral, Qullays. But the Arab pagan population pays homage to the Ka'bah. They are outraged that Abraha wants to his cathedral to replace the ka'bah so they defecate in it in retaliation to show him what they think of "his" place. Arabrah launches an attack against them.

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ
Singular, each and every individual in the town can testify to what happened. Did you not realize, did you not hear enough times. The Quraish were so amazed at this event that they talked about this all the time. The Arabs didn't have a calendar. Their calendar this event, it was their time of reference/frame of reference. 10 years before 3aam al Feel or 5 years after 3aam al Feel. How did your Lord deal with the army of 10,000 more than the population of arabia combined with a dozen elephants that could run the huts over and flatten the entire city. How can it be, if not for the work of the Master, the city of this peace could be retained. It was not a random accident. Someone is taking care of this city, even in face of Ashab al Feel.

This Surah has a warning for a tyrant that lives in any age in any civilization. He wants to reek havoc an innocent people. He exploits them because they do not have a military defense to match their might and power. When the rulers are weak, they call for the rule of the law but when they have power, they say that it is a special circumstance so they bend the law.
Do you realize how Allah comes to His House and He will come to the help of the Prophet (s.a.w). He has no armies, nothing to defend himself with. He not in a very good position from an economic point of you but Allah aided the Makkans from the unseen and same He will do for His Messenger.

بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ They are like animals, lack of intelligent. They were lower in status and state than even the animals. Because the animal refused to demolish the Ka'bah and they were insistent to break it.

كَيْدَ plan made in secret to hurt someone, to rob or ambush.
Allah uses herd of birds to destroy these monumental plan. These peaceful, graceful bird dominate and reek havoc on their armies.
Doesn't it scare you the bird didn't drop pebbles upon you. They had GPS on you but they hit another target.

Surah `Asr - Highlights

وَالْعَصْرِ
Time and the passage of time is something that is magnificent, that demands reflection.

إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
The object is time and the subject is the loss of the human. The object is a proof for the subject.
What is the proof? Time is something that we cannot keep. It is leaving us and it continues to leave us. Time itself is evidence that humans are going bankrupt. We already have so many regrets of opportunities that we did not avail, they passed us by.
Allah is bringing time as a witness that human beings are in loss. We run after things that are distract us from our real purpose. Nations before us, having been failing over the same drama - the pursuit of car, house, women. Time is one of Allah's creation, that is sees this great human tragedy. It's like "here we go".
Asr is the last part of the time, the time when the merchant and the traveler are in a hurry. So they rush to sell off their merchandise or reach their destination because when night falls, they are doomed. So this time is associated with a sense of urgency. We don't have time to react. The sunset of our life is at bay. We are in state of emergency. A second's delay can be fatal.
The struggle of the human being is that of an ice vendor. He needs to make the sales fast before his ice melts.

إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
They are necessarily connected. They are tied with each other, in fact, the last 3 are the result of the first. If you want to check you have imaan, then see if you do good deeds, enjoin patience and truth.
If you are really doing good, you will tell others. Some people will love you for it and others will hate you for it. So you will need lots of sabr.
One is the state of the heart, and the 3 are actions. 2 we do at a minimum level and the remaining 2 are generally looked over.

MYOB - Mind your own business is not the policy of the believers. The very basic  thing that we do when there is a problem, is find the truth. You hear your mother and grand mother are not talking to each other, if you love them both, then you will hear both of their stories and try to get them to reconcile. Finding the truth necessitates that one person is wrong and the other is right. So you either confront them with your solution (apologize, return what was taken unjustly etc). But if you mind your own business, ur mom and grandma may never speak to each other again.
Same thing if you are walking by and see kids playing baseball too close to a the parking lot and you see them bashing the car windows. So you know the truth, at least you are not damaging other people's property. You feel you should stop them, they don't have any right. But then you think that you might get bashed. So you walk away and let them do what they are. But this make you human? So many non-Muslims stand for what is right. Animal rights, environment. Justice and equality. They are looked as heroes though it cost them an eye, a tooth, a night in jail or whatever. Their name is celebrated.
Allah gave us the entire truth (people protest for small truths) and where are we defending it? Look at the patience non-Muslims have for such trivial things. How they organize themselves and persevere. Compete with them in the taqwa of Allah.

وَالْعَصْرِ
Different ages, decades and centuries that passed.
The night and day. When you see nightfall or daybreak, you should be reminded that I am in loss. I am losing.
Know that you are in the verge of death.
When we have a sense of emergency, the boss walks in and says "every single employee is in trouble. They will lose big." Do you go like, oh well that's not me? No you will turn your life upside down to prevent the loss. You wreck your brain. You quit sleep, food, family. And buckle and just work work work work work. If there is a death in the family, if your child is sick, you take out time to give the attention the event needs. You will take time off work, you will cancel your meetings. You will tell your friends you cannot make it to the game. You won't worry about adding an another room to your house or enhancing your car. You will just worry about one thing and that is your dead mother's funeral and your sick daughter's health. The rest will like not matter to you one bit.

Insaan - As human beings we forget. You will listen to this lecture and forget about it when you reach the parking lot. We suck when it comes to remembering things. We will make all sorts of promises to change and to commit but moments later we will trip on our plans and do something totally different.
Each and every single human being is in a state of loss. Forget everyone else, I am in trouble. Allah is calling me a loser. On the Day of Judgment, the mother doesn't care for the child, the child will not look for his friends. So don't do charity and think that this ayah is for others not me. No. Allah is point and saying YOU! YES YOU! are in trouble. Allah could have said, Naas - all people. So forget everyone else, and worry about urself first! Look at yourself. You send your kids to Islamic School because u say they need good environment, then why are you watching that stuff? Why you not getting up for Salah? You bring your child to the imaam because they need advise, you think you don't need advise. You should get the advise first because you screwed up and now this kid needs advise.

We are at loss with this addiction of material things that will never be satisfied. We are at loss with being blinded by our problems. Things which are of trivial value. We are at loss with the preoccupation with ourselves. We don't pay attention to Allah's signs in His creation. We don't thank Allah. We have no connection. We are a people without any patience, gratitude or wisdom. We are just losers.
Monuments and ruins are a record of nations that were destroyed. Time is an enemy that you cannot fight. Time will get you. Look at other nations, even they couldn't do outdo time.

Human beings have more suffering than animals. Physical + pyschological suffering. We are being killed pyschology. You are going to meet Allah and you are going every day, advancing towards him. On the Day of Judgment, we would wish we were dust. Today we want this car, that house, that kitchen set, that bed sheet, those curtains, that cake and on Day of judgment, we wish we were never.

The majority sets the trends, standards. Even in psychology, normal is what the majority does and abnormal is going against it. So the Muslim stands out as the odd ball in society. We go against what everyone else is doing and enjoying. People begin to talk about us, eye us different. They come and ask us questions, some yell at us and others feel sorry for us. We don't go to parties, we don't party, we don't buy stuff on credit. Its like, what is wrong with you man? What are you being so hard on yourself? Why being so rigid? Have a little fun. Live a little. Don't be a loser. You are going to lose out if you don't cash in now. Soon we start feeling uncomfortable with sticking out. We feel lonely. We dont' want to appear strange any more. So we throw in the towel and join the people in their sins. But it is important to note that the majority is wrong. Majority is misguided. You are the exception. You need to keep away from the misguidance and disobedience mobs.

Just the sight of each other gives us strength. We don't know anyone by name or even by face. But just seeing people in hijab/beards/thob is imaam rushing. The moment we are together, we feel a sense of community, a sense of belonging and this helps us increase imaan and do good deeds. It makes the struggle a little easier because you know so many others with you are engaged in the same fight. So it is important that we are connected to the masjid, to study circles, we have contact with each other. otherwise we'll suffer a loss of imaan. You feel suffocation inside of your heart and you come back and listen to the khutbah, you pray salah in congregation, its like you are alive again, you can breathe again.

Fruits of Imaan: peace with your life because you know your life and everything in it belongs to Allah. People say, I lost my kid, I lost my car, I lost my job, I lost my wife. No, I belong to Allah and all that I was given in this world was also Allah's property. So you are tranquil in good and bad times. This guy in New Orleans owned a car dearlership. He was selling hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cars every week. Life was fantastic for him and his dad. Then Katrina came. When the levies broke, everything was washed away, including his showroom. The only car that they could save was the Lexus which they escaped on. Now this brother is delivers pizza in that lexus. But if you see him any time during the day, you'll notice him with a big smile always. If this happened to anyone else, they would just pop a bottle of advil or jump of a cliff and get it over with. But this brother, he says that when business was good, he was too busy. Now, he has more time to play with the kids, to treat his wife. He doesn't miss a single salah in the masjid. There is food on the table. There is so much to be grateful for. You get that only with imaan. If you don't have imaan, you would say this guy is a loser. When you long for something other than Allah, it drives you off the bridge. But when you long for Allah, Allah gives you satisfaction.

The human being is created in the best way and is qualified to be successful but he is in loss.
In this Surah Allah mentions 4 things in the end: the last two things (tawaso - are both actions, they are translated as enjoining the truth and perseverance). These are the actions that people will overlook. But they are so necessary.
وَ - means 'and' Anyone who wants to be saved from loss MUST do (a), (b), (c) and (d)
Loss is mandated upon all human beings except for those who approach Allah withe these 4 things. The salvation on the DofJ hangs with these 4 conditions.
The human being is created frail, pathetic. He gets easily excited for the smallest of things and overly depressed for the smallest of things.
إِلَّا the vast majority will be lost except a few. Very limited people will behave in the way Allah has prescribed.
The Surah is "who is not a failure" This gives a minimum requirement. This Surah is not about success, this is about survival. It is not about Jannah but escaping the hellfire. When your survival is being questioned, you forget everything else. You cannot talk about success unless you have guaranteed your survival. If your office was on fire, would you still negotiate your promote. It doesn't make any sense that a person would talk about anything else if they cannot guarantee their survival. If you were dying, what is the thought on you mind? I CAN'T BREATHE Not, what is for dinner? I have to take out the trash.
Being good is not enough. You must concern yourself with the survival of others for the sake of your own survival.

خُسْرٍ
khasara = loss on top a pre-existing trouble. So we are not in trouble (we aren't in trouble to begin with) but we are putting ourselves in trouble.
Kusraan = a lot of loss, a total loss, an ultimate loss

Every human being aspires to something that they call success. You look at something, don't you get distracted? When you drive by a nice house? There was a Gallardo on hw 401 and people ran out of their houses to chase it down the street. This is what goes on in our head.
Pharaoh had a celebrity crib. Qaroon had so many keys you had to hire people to carry it. Success? Prophet (s.a.w) was deported from Makkah. Ayyub lived in the jungle, lived off from shrubs. Failure? For sure. So we need to rearrange our thinking. The society sets a wrong standard of success that bombards u and pumps you until you accept it. Because everyone thinks this way, desires it and is working for it, it must be right. So a change in attitude is required. Success is not on the earth. Not to say that the earth is evil. Nice things are not evil intrinsically. But if you think these things are success then you have failed. Having the dunya is not evil but loving the dunya, being influenced by the dunya is failure.
Human beings are drowned in loss, emersed in loss. Totally loss. There are no exceptions. If we don't address this, then there is no point talking about success. There is no success.

You are drowning and your unconscious. Do you have a lot of time? When your time is running out, it is called الْعَصْرِ Last part of the day, and the day is running out. 3aseer is juice so time is being squeezed out. So to live, you need to wake up - OPEN YOUR EYES. If you continue sleeping, or wake up and go back to sleep, you have no one to blame but themselves. So you shake them back to consciousness, then wake up other around you and encourage him to save others. You wake up everyone and take them to the shore and go back and wake up. Get them to swim to safety. You need each other to make it. You cannot give up.
Its like you wake you during Friday Khutbah, when you read the Qur'an then you go back to sleep so you have to go wake up the people around you again otherwise they will drown and unconscious. And if you don't save them, you will drown with them. You are tied to them and they are to you. If you don't pull them out, they will pull you down.

This Surah is about this Dunya. Time is running out. Time is being drained away from all of us. It is the heart of the entire Qur'an. We read it when we want to pray hit and run salah. When we are late for a movie, for a game or for food, we just recite this Surah and quickly wrap up our Salah.
This is the last Surah in the Qur'an in which Allah takes an oath.
The entire manhaj of the Prophet (s.a.w) is summarized in this Surah.

Surah Takathur - Highlights

Allah opened this Surah with the reason why people will be in Hellfire.
أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ
أَلْهَا  - laam haa wow - entertainment. That which keeps you busy and takes you away from what you should be doing.
To be distracted and pulled away from something. كَاثُرُ - excess, a lot لتَّكَاثُرُ the desire to have a lot (distracted you). Constantly comparing yourself with others. Its cut throat rivalry. Its the urge to show off. You brag about what you have though no one has asked you about it because this is your identity. The only time you feel alive is when you have something you can rub on someone's face. You want to be known as the one who has the most in terms of this or that.  But the more we run after people, the more empty we feel from inside. We think that the next thing will be enough, will make us happy but after a few days of getting it, we get bored and move on to chasing the next new thing. People wait all night sometimes for some phone or tickets. They get plastic surgery to look like someone they are not. The houses are over flowing with stuff and nothing satisfies their crave.
حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ
زُرْتُ - zee-arah, to meet, and hug. to visit.
We never go to the graves until we are being transferred there, moving in.
كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِي
الْيَقِينِ - solid conviction, unflinching commitment. Stronger than imaan. It is something you are so convinced of that you are deep inside satisfied with it. For sure as yesterday. Its an absolute premise, you don't go back and revisit it again.
Allah is expressing regret. Had you only known knowledge of certainty.
We believe in death but we aren't really convinced that we'll die ever.
لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ
The stare of the lion that is about to eat you. The prey gets terrified that it is not about to run anyway because it is caught by the eyes. The flames of hellfire will stare at you. You will def. def. def. see hellfire, you'll have to look at in the eyes.
ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ
You will be asked about the blessings you used to enjoy. Say astaghfirullah i will be asked about my really nice house, my really fast car.
We are confused because we think more is better when in fact more distracts us from thinking about our death and preparing for the hereafter. If we remember that Allah will hold us accountable for everything that we have, even a glass of water, then these blessings will keep us on tract. These things are a track. We need to return them with an answer of what we did with tehm.

Surah Qari`ah - Highlights

There is a four part series to the Day of Judgment:
Handed the Book, shown the contents of the Book - what you did, it is going to weighed and evaluated, then you will be judged.

الْقَارِعَةُ
A disturbing loud sound from a crash. A tough tough situation that has disturbed you and taken your sleep away.
To be knocked and beaten around that is so nasty it creates a loud sound. It is disturbing.
When you insult and humiliate someone in public
To knock on the door in the middle of the night. People were not expecting it, you wake up abruptly, its a shock, you are scared.
The rattling destructive noise
The word is repeated three times, it shows the intensity and repetition of this calamity and noise.
It is like saying FIRE FIRE FIRE - so the listener goes like, where? what? what do we do? Then Allah says وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ you are not going to find out until I tell you. It is not something you are used to. Not like any other rattler. You do not have a clue what it is, it pales all the other calamities. Only I can inform you.
This is one of the descriptions of the Day of Judgment.

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ
النَّاسُ - plural of Insaan
كَالْفَرَاشِ- Bugs/moths. that try to hit the light when you turn it on.  Sscattered and going every which way. There is chaos, they are even running into each other. When the rattling sound happens, you will be so shocked and wrecked, this is what will happen to you. The same when people will come out of their graves, they will be so frieghtened.

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ
عِهْنِ - wool
na faa saa - to make into fine fiber by scraping and then intertwined. Fiber that is weightless.

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ
evil deeds will have no weight, only good deeds will hold any value. AND Allah will make their deeds worthless by giving them no weight.

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ
A life full of pleasure and contentment. Not a moment will go by that joy will be mising.

فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ
هَاوِيَةٌ - When a bird dives down, its falls faster than falling. It shoots down like an arrow with speeds. canyon in hellfire, its depth is only known by Allah.
idiom - you look like your mother fell off a cliff.
Hellfire will be his mother. It will hug him, smother him and not let go. it would like being stuck in its womb and not able to come out. engulfed by the fire.

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ
حَامِيَةٌ - sun's intensity is called himmaa also

Surah Adiyat - Highlights

The greed, careless of the human being and things he does without thinking of its consequences. In the previous Surah we learned that the human being will be crying when he will see his sins coming out of the earth. In this Surah we will have a look at what people are doing on earth.
The first 5 verses are oaths. They are dedicated to get the attention of the Arabs. They lived in the desert, they break out into fights easily. You look at the guy in the wrong way, and they engage in warfare for generations. They entertain themselves with poetry. They song about stories of battles, scenes of battle, horses (fast cars).

وَالْعَادِيَاتِ ضَبْحًا
عَادِيَاتِ - Running after the enemy in battle. You don't look left or right, you just charge to one person with animosity. For the Arab is the trailer of an action movie.
ضَبْحً - The horse is going as fast as it can, and marching forward towards an enemy. The horse is using its full potential. They will go after the enemies as wolves pound on their prey. So the Arab is encapsulated with this image.

فَالْمُورِيَاتِ قَدْحًا
They are blazing the trail behind them
قَدْحًا - every step is very loud, the gallop is pounding.

فَالْمُغِيرَاتِ صُبْحًا
eeghara - Horses take their riders right on top the enemy. It refers to ambush. The enemy is on the ground and the rider is over him.
ghaara is to commit crimes, to pillage and carnage
صُبْحًا - they attack in the morning, there is a lot of moisture in the morning - although it is wet, sparks are going anyway. Water evaporates immediately and turns into fire. You want the enemy to know that you are coming, you aren't afraid of the battle. This is the confidence that they have.

فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا
وَسَطْ - They penetrate to the very middle. The use the advantage of the cloud of dust. They all went to the heart of the enemy. They formed a spear, they hit them and entered their ranks as they came crushing in. Now they are surrounded by the enemy.

The Arabs loves the horse, the battle horse, the female battle horse because it is fast. This horse is loyal that it is willing to give up its own safety and life for his master. The Arabs write poetry about their horse, how beautiful it is, how strong it is. How he keeps his horse fenced so no one will look at it. He hired a servant to look after it all because the horse is so useful and loyal. Then Allah says,
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ
human being is not loyal towards its Master at all. A carve ball is thrown at the mushrik. It hits him in the heart, he cannot come up with an intellectual heart. Allah gave you all of these gifts of a body and skill, horse etc and what you do with it? You rob and your murder and commit zinnah. Even in the movie industry they get a bunch of good actors to glorify crimes. Oceans 11 - how to rob a casino. Fast and Furious - how to steal cars.
The horse does not disassociate himself from its human trainer but the human disassociates himself from its Master, Allah.
كَنُودٌ - extremely ungrateful. They only talk about problems. We want more. We train our kids to be the same. We take them to the toy store, and they always walk out unhappy because no matter what you go them, they are leaving behind $2 million dollar worth of merchandise. They say can we get that next time, can we also have that? When they grow up, they always want more and sometimes unrealistic things out of their education, marriage, house. We milk what we have for all that it has. If you have a cow, you keep it till it gives milk, then you slaughter it for its meat after its dry. Can you imagine? We are so greedy. We demand that everything should serve our purpose. What about Allah who created us? He gave us everything. What should He do with us when we are not grateful to Him?

وَإِنَّهُ لِحُبِّ الْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ
حُبِّ - Perception of something desirable (you think its really good for you), engaged in relentless pursuit for it.
شَدِيدٌ - to tie a rope, to be tied up in this love of wealth.
They are not satisfied, its never enough. So they are never thankful

أَفَلَا يَعْلَمُ إِذَا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِي الْقُبُورِ
بُعْثِرَ - turn things upside down to find something. You will be yanked out of the graves like junk out of a box.
The people you buried because of your love of wealth. You put them in mass graves, you buried them over explosives. There was no record for their death. You didn't leave a trace. They will come out of their graves, wherever you hid their bodies. In whichever acid you threw them and no matter how many pieces you made of them.
This is the sad reality of the world. The most deaths are in the name of wealth. People kill people for inheritance, business deal, ownership, purse, cellphone.

وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي الصُّدُورِ
صُّدُورِ - The testimony and motivates will be out.

إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِيرٌ
خَبِيرٌ - to be fully aware of the reality, every detail. More powerful than aleem.

Surah Zilzaal - Highlights

This Surah addresses two major themes:
(1)People could not fathom the idea of the world ever coming to an end. It has always been there, its not going anywhere, how will it cease to exist? It is vast, stable, self-sustaining. What will cause it to die?
(2) Shirk is to have an middle person between you and Allah. So long as the in-between person is happy with you, knows you, you don't have to worry about pleasing Allah and obeying Him etc. So we make other people deal with our sins, we ask a third person to make duaa for us, to make istikhara for us, to read Qur'an for us. This is the heart of Christian religion, they are not responsible for their actions, Jesus bears their burdens.

إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا
The world will end with an earthquake.
زِلْزَالَ - To slip. But because the phenotics are repeating, it means someone who keeps slipping, tripping and do not have stable footing. Its redundant, over and over again. People will not be able to stand, they will be shook.
When the earth is shaken violently, as it was always meant to. This is the beginning of the end.
To remind something to someone that they keep forgetting. It is like saying "and remember when". "When" makes it an absolute reality. Allah didn't say "if the earth shakes" instead Allah says "when it will shake" meaning that is certain. Its only a matter of time.
Allah didn't say that He will shake the earth. Allah says, "when the earth will be shaken". So this means that it will get done, its really easy. Allah doesn't even have to mention His Name, its so easy for Him that it doesn't even deserve a mention that He will do it.
هَا - A unique earthquake cannot even be capture. The earth has has made a promise to Allah that it will shake on that Day and it is fulfilling that promise. In Allah's wisdom and will, the earth was always meant to shake. It is in the earth's destiny. It was created to shake one day. The purpose of something is its end, not the journey. So the earth was never meant to be a place where you live, build a home, enjoy etc. No inch of the earth will be left torn from its place.
زُلْزِلَ - The earthquake will come again and again and again. It is just going to shake so much until there is nothing left.

وَأَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا
خْرَجَ - To take out. (barrazza means to take out and put right in front for the one to see)(tarada means to push something away when it is not to your liking or up to your class).

وَأَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا
أَخْبَارَ - The earth is watching and it will give its news of what we did on top it. It got a recorder inside. If we cannot be mindful of Allah because Allah is in the unseen, realize that the earth that you are on is watching u.
The more sins we do, the earth gets loaded with it. Its like you keep stuffing you face, stuffing your face and if you don't stop, you will throw up. The earth gets to vomit and relax from all our sins that was making it heavier. Sometimes the earth burps (minor earthquakes and other natural disasters on a small scale here and there) but total expulsion will be on the Day of Judgment.
Allah says in Surah Rahman that humans and jinns are sathqalaan - two burdens. Am I a burden on the earth?

وَقَالَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا لَهَا
الْإِنسَانُ - This is the biggest collective ever, there will be no place to move your feet but we will feel entirely alone.
It also means that we had forgotten the Day of Judgment. We know it is suppose to shake and this is meant to happen but we forgot.

يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا
تُحَدِّثُ  - Used to warn something. To make someone aware of something. Very peculiar use of the word in the ayaah.
تُحَدِّثُ  - The existence of something that wasn't there before. To tell the audience something that they previously didn't know. Something new. to tell them something that they completely forgot so it feels like new. To speak in a way that the audience missed the previous lecture/episode. It is when the speaker pretends the audience does not know anything. So that is how the earth will speak. The earth will remind them of every last detail, leaving no gaps.

بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَىٰ لَهَا
Allah give it permission to speak. Allah wanted this and the earth wanted it.

يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِّيُرَوْا أَعْمَالَهُمْ
On that day people will be turned away.
Saadir - someone who left home, got water from the well and came home. Sadar - go and come back.
When the humans beings will come back to the earth (after death), the earth will be different. The previous earth was for our actions and now this new earth to witness our actions and suffer their consequences.
أَشْتَاتًا - We will be broken, cannot go back to our family, friends. عْملَ
Amal is that which we intend. We had some intention behind that deed/action and then we did it. Fa3al is thoughtless actions, like instant reflex. No planning went behind it. Allah will hold us accountable for things we had "ikhtiyaar" over, that we chose to perform. We made an honest decision and followed through.

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ
Atom is weightless. Something that they may have done so small in terms of good.
ذَرَّةٍ - Small specks of dust that fly in with sunlight into the room when you open the curtain.
خَيْرًا - Easily distinguished as good, you know it, its naturally known.
شَرًّا - Whose evil is naturally known. Even those who do it know its bad, its universally understood.
يَرَهُ - literally and figuratively. People will see all of their deeds and understand what they are worth. Like when you are a cell phone deal, they may end up getting a contract that is so incriminating. It ends up costs so much that they had no idea they were signing up for it. But for the people who will end up in Hell will have a very very good idea what was so wrong that they did because of which they are in hell.
Allah will show us for the things that He forgave us for. And for the deeds Allah multiplied our reward. We'll appreciate Allah's mercy and generosity that day. So you'll see the complete legend. How your sins and good deeds are tallied up.

The Surah beings with something really massive and ends with something minute. Meaning, all this tremendous changes on large scale for the sake of our small small deeds. This is the value of your actions.

Surah Bayyinah - Highlights

Makki Surah

مُنفَكِ - something attached to the bone and very painful to separate from it.
Cut it out, stop doing it. They wouldn't refrain until the clearest proof came to them.
The people who separate themselves, and the people who quit what they were continuously until this revelation came.
مِنْ - not all the people of the Book disbelieved, some disbelieved and many became Muslims. They were very committed for millenniums to their kufar beliefs and traditions until the revelation came. The revelation caused them to leave their kuffar and legacy for good.
The Qur'an was revealed in the nigth of Power and the power of the Qur'an is such that it people separated from their nations in a way that they never went back. Their lives changed forever.
كَفَرُ- To bury a seed deep in the dark. Every seed is in the darknesses of kuffar until the revelation come to them. No society (person) is entirely good or bad. There is an element of either or that exists everywhere and in everyone. All lines disappeared, no tribal lines, races. It either became Imaan or kuffar - either u were on this side or the other.

Theory is not good enough. The proofs of Islam are not enough when the practice is not there. This is the greatest obstacle in Da'wah. So Islam is based on laws.
فِيهَا كُتُبٌ قَيِّمَةٌ - There are laws in the revelation, قَيِّمَ means that which is firm, upright, stand on their own. These laws set straight what is crocked. This is the benefit of the laws of Allah. It removes the crockedness in society and sets it straight.
كُتُبٌ  - The judge threw the book at him / I am driving by the book = the judge used the full extent of the law against him, I am following the rules of driving. So even in English jargon, book means binding.

وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَةُ
No result happened except that they fell into division. This is alluding the Esa (a.s), when he came, the people who were of one religion, they became separated. There was no division of Jews and Christians, they used to be one group of believers until Esa (a.s) came with the clearest proofs came. They fell into darkness after knowledge came to them.

Allah is telling us a social religion. Religious knowledge is a weapon, people who possess it has a status and respect. They are listened to. Knowledge is not a safeguard against corruption. So you can be a scholar and a person of bad character. So all the attention can get to your heard. From the outside there may be a facade of nobility but inside there could be malice. So if someone else come, with more knowledge, it wounds their ego. Especially if the new guy is saying that the past scholars were wrong. When the crowds direct their praise to someone else, the previous scholar starts calling the new one deviant and issues fatwa against them to protect their popularity. The agenda is not to hold on to the truth, it is not to find the right guidance, it is ego. They simply wanted domination and monopoly.
So they were called to humble themselves before Allah and the new Messenger (Muhammad s.a.w). This is hard to do when the messenger when he is just a man like that. We have natural tendency to not like the person who has authority over us. Our nafs wants to be wild and free. So unless we are truly sincere to Allah, we will take Qur'an AND Sunnah! Rejecting the Sunnah is ego! Bayyinah is both the messenger and the message.
لِيَعْبُدُوا - ibadaah = particular acts of worship offered at particular times. Every religion has specific modes of worship. The images that pop in their mind is being in a holy place, kneeling or bowing down etc.
What is slavery? It has no time associated with it. Slave is a slave always. It demands total obedience, it can demand anything from you and you are bound to comply. Slavery is involuntary. It conjures negative images in the mind. Service is a give and take ( you get wages), it is specified (if you are an accountant, you cannot be asked to wash the window unless the economy is bad). You apply for a service. This seems very convenient. So for the sake of our own connotation. We have to remain true to the Islam.
Slavery in Islam is according to Ibn Taimia rahimaAllah (1) obedience to Allah, His obedience comes first (2) Love and love of His creation is subservient to His love (3) Sincerity - everything is for Allah. Your entire life is for Allah. Worship suggests that only your prayer belongs to Allah and the rest of your life, you can do as you life. So when you make career goals, marriage goals - your agenda is to being close to Allah. Allah asks for slavery but we limit it to only worship. (5) Absolute trust in Master, whatever He gave us is good for us and whatever He did not give us is also good for us. If we got something it is from Allah. Your don't trust your car because it comes from a reliable company or you don't trust your family. You place your expectations in Allah. Whenever you depend on His creation, you will be disappointed.
The terms of slavery are not dictated by us. We cannot assume it or define it by ourselves. This standard is dictated by Allah. So we cannot place our own conditions on our relationship with Allah.
The essence of Qur'an is to become Allah's slaves. This is why Allah sent bayyinah.
The people who were given to the Book and the musrikheen were not commanded except that they fall into Allah's slavery and worship.
This also includes to make the Deen sincere to Him - to be just the slave of Allah ALONE! No ego, no shirk to Esa (a.s) or idol. Look at the story of Iblees, he worshiped Allah for a long long long time! Then he fought for religious recognition when attention was shifted from him to Adam (a.s). So our Ikhlaas is challenged. The people of knowledge from ranks are the worst to argue with each other in terms of religion, not for the sake of guidance or truth but for religious recognition, they want the spot light.
حُنَفَا - When you incline away from deviation and fix yourself to the straight path.
وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ - Ibadaat and Mu'aamlaat. This is the established religion since all times. To become the slave of Allah, to worship Allah, establish salah and give zakah.
وَذَ‌ٰلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ - This Deen will have victory, those who do this will be on top. They have something firm.
The summary of this aayaah is the cleansing of ikhlaas inside (the understanding of slaver) and outside (establishing salah and zakah).

إِنَّ - for sure, get the doubts out of your mind. This WILL happen.
خَالِدِ - To remain permanently in it.
شَرُّ - The most vicious, nastiest.  الْبَرِيَّةِ  Something that exists
They are the worst of all all existence because after the clearest light and proofs came to them, they still remained on kuffar.

Garden and beach front is an obsession in the human mind. These are the most expensive property. We think that the Qur'an is speaking primitive Arabs who had no gardens and water so the Qur'an is not for us because we are sophisticated and we would want something better. Then why are we obsessed with the same. As people get older, they really get into gardening. We vacation in a place where there is a lot of nature, a river flowing etc. When you buy a house, what is the thing that you want to install in the backyard? You want to deck out the lawn with vegetables and flowers. To have a pool or a hot tub. So Allah knows what He created.
We want permanent residence. We don't want to rent, we want to own, to have stability. To become resident, have citizenship.  Parents always telling you to get married and settled down. But everything in dunya falls apart. It gets boring, there are financial troubles. In Jannah, Allah is giving us a house. There are no bills, no maintenance, no plumbing.
رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ - Allah is completely happy with them and you are completely happy with Allah. No one on earth is completely happy with us even if we buy them stuff.
خَشِيَ  - The fear of something that is greater than yourself.

This Surah began with how the world was fragmented. This revelation that came in the night of power, it joined the world on Laa illaha ilAllah. Now from many religions, there became just two primary divisions, imaan and kuffar.

Surah Qadr - Highlights

The previous Surah is about HOW the Qur'an was revealed, this Surah is about WHEN it was revealed. Allah began the first revelation with the instruction "Read". Allah sent the first revelation in the night of Qadr. Allah ended the previous Surah with the command to do sajda, the best time to be close to Allah in sujood is the night of Qadr till morning. Jibreel (a.s) brought the first revelation, and in the night of Qadr, Jibrel (a.s) brings our destiny.
Ibn Abbas opinion (which he shared with Umar) is that the night of Qadr is on the 27th because the word "layl al Qadr" has nine letters. The word Qadr appears in this Surah 3 times. 9x3=27 There are 30 words in this Surah, the 27th word is "hiyya" which is referring to Layl al Qadr. But the safest opinion is that this night comes in one of the first 5 odd nights of the last 10 days of Ramadan.

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ
Allah says "We" in the Qur'an whenever He does something Majestic, like creating the human being and providing us sustenance. Allah uses the "I" pronoun when He is severely angry or intensely merciful, forgiving. Whenever Allah uses "Nahnu" for Himself, He either places before it or after it His attribute Rabb or His Name - Allah. So it should never be confused that it is plural. It is the Royal We, two show nobility and blessedness.
Allah says "We sent it down" - it refers to the Qur'an. Allah uses a pronoun for the Qur'an. The believers were obsessed with the Qur'an, they are dying for it while the disbelivers are willing to kill against it, they can't stand it.

لَوَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ
الْقَدْرِ - The night of destiny (yearly budget is set for every person). The night of great dignity and honour. The night of appreciate - when people obey Allah in this, Allah really appreciates them. Allah counts this one night's worship as better than a thousand months. Power, Tightness (because so many angels descent that it is tight).
مَا - to surprise and give you a sense of awe. Do you realize what amazing thing it is?
Allah has mercy on His close friends. The worshippers of Allah realize their own worth this night. If you are not worth anything to Allah, you will sleep through it, you won't be able to take any advantage of it. Those who are really seeking Allah really appreciate Him this night.

لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
The deeds that you person in this night, it is better than a thousand months (83 years). The average life for women is 80 and for men is 74. Allah gives us beyond and gives us an opportunity to do ibadaah for our entire lifespan.
You can accomplish more good that it is unlike any other. If you have problems with your family, this is the time to make up.

All access pass to meet the celebrity, meet the Dean or the President at a press conference. The angels hold the Believers at this high regard. They bring our destiny and salam till morning. When the permission is giving to them, they come rapidly to deliver the two.
They bring all sorts of commands = all sorts of wise decisions.

Surah Alaq - Highlights

This Surah is the flip side of Surah Teen, what happens when the human being succumbs from the best stature and becomes an animal (rebellious). How does a person become the lowest of the low? It is discussed in this Surah.
In the previous Surah Allah says we have been created physically and morally the best. What makes us best is discussed in this Surah and that is intellect, the ability to learn.
In the previous Surah Allah asks what kind of a person will lie against the Deen, the Judgment of Allah? This Surah answers this question.

Aisha (r.a) asked that she asked the Prophet (s.a.w) how the revelation started? He (s.a.w) that he used to see true dreams. Then solitude became beloved to him. Then he used to be alone in the cave of Hira - he used to spend many nights in Hira. He wanted to wash off the influences of evil society, remove himself and disassociate himself from what they do while he was in Hira. What were his questions. Of them we know that the Prophet (s.a.w) was part of a peace group/organization (hilf al fudool). It is possible, he used to ask, I have been helping the hungry, how do I eradicate hunger itself. I have been helping the oppressed, how do I end oppression itself. What is the source of all these problems and how do we grapple with them? The US has opened hotlines and crisis help centers, the UN counsel itself to stop crimes, abuses and wars but failed. So is human race doomed to eat itself up? Self-destruct? The carnage will go on until it takes a toll on everyone?

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
اقْرَأْ  - this command was given to a messenger (s.a.w) who was not read, there were no schools or libraries in his community For the most part, all arabs were illiterate, though they were poets, their poetry was rarely ever documented because no one knew how to read. But this one word revolutionized the history of the people. It made the Muslims the most learned and scholarly people in the world. We were the first to open universities, invent the library cataloging system. The roots of modern Ph.D can be traced back to the Muslims ijazah system. This one word brought the art of learning and this drive to study to the entire Muslim world and through us it spread to all other human beings. We became the intellectual capital of the world. But there are more universities in California and France than all the universities in the Muslim world combined!! Think about generations to come.
The philosophy is to live it up. Buy a lot and let someone else after your die pay your debt off. Donal Trumpet is one of the richest man on earth but if he payed off all his debt right now, he would be in minus millions. Muslims, because we copy this lifestyle, our mindset is on enjoying life and very little on studying in life. And if we do study we only study to make more money to buy more things to live it up more.

Also the problem with the ancient religions was that they had classified religious scripture. Anything that Allah revealed, the clergy hid it from the common masses. People were not allowed to read what was in the Bible or the Hindu Vedas. The always had to listen to a Pope or a Bishop or a Hindu monk inform them of God's truth. This gave a class of people absolute monopoly over religion. They could interpret, add/delete from the Holy scripture and no would find out. An going against their dictate meant going against god, that meant blasphemy, and that meant death. So this one word freed humans from blind faith and senseless following. Every person, no matter male, female, child, free or slave, rich or poor had liberty to read Allah's message. There was no ruling class in between to force their interpretation. Religion was made open for the masses to take from.
بِاسْمِ means to read with the support/help of your Rabb, read in the Name of your Rabb meaning let the people know that this message is from Allah, this is not your own speech or ideas or from Jibreel. You are only doing (conveying the message) it for the sake of Allah.
The Qur'an has a 3 step journey -> (1)Loh mehfoodh (2) Words/Speech received by Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) (3) Book again
There is a fundamental difference between speaking and writing (normally people don't write the way they speak). In speech there is no editorial process, in writing there is first/second/third draft/editions/versions. This means that in speech you are more prone to mistakes. You can't take your words back but with a book you can delete an entire page or chapter if you want. So from the very onset of revelation, Allah said "Read" - you do not read speech, you read a Book. So when the prophet (s.a.w) conveyed the revelation to the arabs, they were baffled, how is he speaking so perfectly? How does he sound like a polished book? So they had their theories that he is getting it in writing from someone, some christian slave is translating it for him. If it is a book, how can he have access to it? He doesn't know how to read or write and he doesn't speak any other language.
رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ - Your Master Who Created. He made it and He has full rights on it. It is patented in His Name.
Prophet (s.a.w) had no political power. He as an honest businessman but he didn't hold a position where he could tell people what to believe in and what their religion should be. He didn't have that qualification. So its like Allah saying to Him, "When you speak to people, speak in My Name and the power will come from that." Speaking on the authority of Allah will be His proof. The reason why he (s.a.w) is speaking now is because Allah told him, he is hired by Allah, doing Allah's job.
What did He create? There is nothing specified. There is no limit to what He created.

خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
Allah's profound knowledge of us of which we are unaware. The process of impregnation and conception is highlighted.
What is the lesson behind mentioning how Allah created the human being (1) to reminder of Allah's power of ressurection. Allah can do as He wills (2) This fluid seems useless but from this comes an advance human being with so much intricacy, high function. So if a human has high capability should we must serve a higher purpose. (3) to put us in our place, remind us that we come from something pathetic so there is no reason why we should be arrogant or stubborn against Allah or any of Allah's creation.

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ Should be respected in and of itself. We have nothing in and of ourselves to be respected. It is Allah Who deserves respect. And
He (s.a.w) is told again to read as an encouragement, its okay Read, just do it.

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ
Oral knowledge dies out but written knowledge passes on. The pen delivers knowledge.
Allah swears by the pen, the angels write our deeds and now we are taught to preserve knowledge by the pen. Not just read and study but document knowledge and make it available to others.

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ
We are not entirely free of need, we still abide by traffic rules and pay our taxes. But these are selfish followings yes? We do this for our own benefit, because we know we'll get into a car accident if we break the lights or be jailed for skipping a tax payment.
Then there are physical laws, like you wouldn't jump into water if u don't know how to swim because it will kill you. You would respect the laws of gravity and not jump off your roof no matter how much you want to fly. Because there is a sharp price right away. But moral laws we take advantage of until there life becomes so debauched that it cannot be lived anymore. 9 year old becoming genocidal maniacs, 13 year old father children. The things that you read in the news sometimes are so insane you wonder how is it even possible. Where do you go? The only solution is إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ When you go back to Allah. Like if you were doing something really shameful and your mother walks in. You want to die at spot. You donno how to show your face. Because you have this love for your mother, you don't want to disappoint her or have her think less of you. If we can love Allah more than we love our parents, our things and ourselves, then we will not even think of a sin, even the thought of a sin would be offensive to Allah because Allah knows our thoughts.

Abu Jahal, Abu Lahab and Waleed bin Mugheera are mentioned the Qur'an (not by name necessarily but verses are revealed about them). Abu Jahal was the noblest of the three. He was generous and chivalrous and intelligent. Abu Lahab was a coward, he hired a few soldiers to go fight on his behalf at Badr. But Abu Jahal mustered the entire army himself, led it alone and fought at Badr. When he was killed he wanted his head to be cut off from his shoulders so it would appear bigger than the rest. Waleed bin Mugheera was in between but he was a strategist who thought of how to make prophet (s.a.w) compromise. Prophet (s.a.w) made duaa for Abu Jahal because he was like Umar. Prophet (s.a.w) saw in both of them that was worth saving. If he became Muslim, he would have been another Umar.
Abu Jahal believed in his hearth, Prophet (s.a.w) spoke the truth. He used to like the Qur'an, in fact he was addicted to the Qur'an. He was caught listening to it, outside of the Prophet's house (s.a.w) in the dead of the night three times by Akhnass bin Shuraiq. The only reason why he stopped coming to listen because he was afraid that if the youth found out, he would lose his credibility. He had been telling the youth that he was the elder in the community, the leader and so he should be followed but if the youth saw him following the prophet (s.a.w), they would follow him (s.a.w) too. Then the two go to Abu Sufyan and ask what do you think about the Qur'an and Aby Sufyan says of course it is the truth and Abu Jahal says of course it is the truth. Abu Jahal says that "we are from Banu Amir and he is from Banu Hashim. They fight and we fight equally, they give in charity, we give in charity. But now they have these words and we can never compete with that." So ego got to him. He couldn't get over his seeking of greatness for himself. The only reason why he didn't become Muslim because that would mean that he had to admit that prophet (s.a.w) is better, more guided, more spiritual.

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَىٰ
After Uqbah bin Amir (?) threw the intestines over the prophet (s.a.w), Abu Jahal said that if I see you praying again, I will crush your neck with my feet. So next day when the prophet (s.a.w) was praying and Abu Jahal went to go beat him up, he saw this ditch of fire between him and the prophet (s.a.w) so he bolted from that place screaming. There was a creature in the fire as well that was trying to grab him.

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ
أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

He had so much potential and he was so close but he turned back. He brought so much destruction upon himself. He didn't see the harm that he landed himself in. But the prophet (s.a.w) saw the good in him so he wanted Abu Jahal to be guided. Of course Allah knew better. Abu Jahal thought that he could hurt the prophet (s.a.w) and stop him but Abu Jahal had no fear of Allah. It didn't occur to him that this war he was waging was against Allah and he stood no chance.
What is the relationship between knowledge (first page) and this kaffir - ignorant, rebellious person (the second passage)? Knowledge is a means of humility. Shah Wali Allah said, that when a tree bears fruit, its branches come down. The more knowledge you have, the more humble you should be, it should increase you in fear of Allah. Lack/rejection of that knowledge will lead you to arrogance. So you humble yourself before Allah, Allah raises you to high levels. But when you become stuck up, Allah throws you down and just trashes you.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ
First step in leaving criminal behaviour is feeling that Allah is watching. Do you curse your boss when he watching? Do you take your dad's car when he is working the garage?

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ
You grab someone's head in rage - like an abusive parent would pull the child by the hair and drag them or slap them. Musa (a.s) pulled Haroon by his hair.
بِالنَّاصِيَةِ - In the arab tradition it is the place of your pride, this is where you wear a hat or turban and where the emblem rests
this is where is knowledge (two things that led to his kuffar is his ignorance and arrogance).
You put the forehead down for sajda. If Abu Jahal doesn't bring his head down in submission, it will be in his death and after life.

سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ
زَّبَانِيَةَ- cops, to protect and guard something with force, if it tries to come out - you give it a beating. Security and soldiers.
On one hand you have a bunch of thugs (Abu Jahal) and the other is the SWAT team, the entire army (threat made by Prophet (s.a.w). There is not even a competition.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب
Pay no attention to Abu Jahal, turn completely away from, Allah will deal with him. Just do sajdah and come closer to Allah. Sajdah brings closer to Allah. Seeking knowledge, qiraah and ibadaah are connected. First you learn then you practice. The means of learning is Qur'an. The best ibadaah is Salah.
