I am a High School English Teacher, a wife, a friend and Muslim woman in a full, black abaya with only my eyes showing. You may have seen me at the grocery store, lustfully glancing at the baguette and cheese display or you may have swiftly passed me in the hall, on your way to a class. Maybe I have shared an elevator with you or you have seen me soaking my feet in the water by the lake. A part of you may be curious to get to know who I am and why I cover myself, but intimidation holds you back. Whoever you are, I want to reach out and say Assalamu alaikum (The Muslim greeting for hello is, Assalamu alaikum or may God's peace be with you).
The general uncertainty surrounding Islam can sometimes create an awkward mental schism for daily social interactions with Muslim women. But this is a schism that needs to be bridged. I am a first-generation Muslim Canadian. I am been raised as a Muslim in Canada. My religious beliefs and Canadian upbringings are synchronized. I feel that the teachings of Islam make the most sense to me and Canada is my home country.
I want my voice to be the direct source of my identity as a Muslim Canadian. I am well-aware of the assumptions the world has about Muslim women; through this blog, I welcome the opportunity to clarify misconceptions and stereotypes about Islam.
Islam is more than just a faith; it is deeply integrated into my life socially and institutionally. My family dynamics, the way I carry myself emotionally and mentally, the way I prepare food, meet people, dress, and so many other major and minor life rituals are directed by Islam. This blog offers my feelings, interests, passions and talents in an effort to share Islam.
This blog has four areas of focus:
Qur'an - I am a student of Qur'an. I created this section to aid my daily conversation with Allah and prayer. The selection of verses discussed here reflect the passages of the Qur'an which have personally moved me over the years of my study.
Personal Development - This section is my journal where I think aloud and reflect over my experiences. It contains my life's truths and feelings. It is a place of cathartic release.
Politics - I graduated from UfT with Honours in Politics (BA). I feel very deeply for people and how theIR lives are affected by law and politics. In this corner, I examine international relations and humanitarian concerns from an Islamic point-of-view.
Family - It can be stressful to deal with family sometimes. Sometimes they can drive us crazy, they make us cringe, they can make us cry. In this section, I discuss how to deal with family effectively in an Islamic manner.
I hope that my blog can help build trust and intimacy for deeper conversation and friendship between Muslims and non-Muslims all over the world.
