There is an assumption that we live in modern sophisticated philosophy and anthropology to deal with today's problems and the Qur'an is very simplistic. Its very linear, straight forward thinking that is not complex or abstract enough. So even Muslim scholars thought that the Qur'an speaks to the masses and to reach higher meaning in life, one need other means like mysticism etc. Like Aristotle or Rumi spoke on a different plane, their speech was deeper at a different level.
This surah address this issue, that not to undermine the Qur'an.
Allah takes 3 oaths in the Surah, the response is connected
وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ
This could refer to the fruit themselves or the place where they grow.
Teen could be near Mount Judi or Teen and Zaytun refer to Jerusalem.
وَالتِّينِ - Referring to Nuh (a.s)
Referring to Esa (a.s) - in the Bible says that Jesus said that he prayed on the mountain of olives.
But Qur'an is on the confirming position, we can say that xyz passage in their book may be right because we have it in the Qur'an. But we don't say that because the Bible has something then it must be true and we read the Qur'an in the light of the Bible NO!
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ
أَحْسَنِ - best on the inside and outside. Physically and morally upright.
تَقْوِيمٍ - perfectly designed for its purpose.
Nuh, Musa, Esa and Muhammad (s.a.w) are proofs for the above. They didn't run after wealth, their stomachs or fame. They are proof that Allah created humans above animals and they have better than animal tendencies. They are the upright examples for the human race to follow. So the human being is more than cars, diet, plastic surgery, losing weight, getting getting wealhty.
People think that religion is only the opium of the masses, remove religion and the world will be better? The rate of suicide, heinous crimes, crimes against children, bizzare practices, is an all time high in the absence of religion - subhanAllah.
ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَاهُ أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ
Allah created the human being High and when the human being didn't prove worthy, Allah removed him. So not only did Allah have authority and power in creation the person but also elevating and debasing Him. Allah is fully in control of the person.
فَمَا يُكَذِّبُكَ بَعْدُ بِالدِّينِ
After all of this, why would you lie against the religion? Is to this extent, this low you have have become, worse than animal?
Lie when you know it is true. They criticize the religion so they can live with themselves without following it. SO they would poke at ayaat and hadith not out of intellectual curiosity but to make the religion look bad as a way to escape accepting to it.
This is the lowest of the low.
Deen has two meaning. Precise judgment, in this world and the next, i.e. payback. It also encompasses the teachings of the prophets (as mentioned above) brought to the people in their specific locations.
أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِأَحْكَمِ الْحَاكِمِينَ
Isn't Allah? The way this question is asked is to poke at someone who is ungrateful. Have you forgotten already of this obvious fact? Did yo forget who created you in the best possible fashion or that you have forgotten that Allah will reward or punish you?
Hikmah - wisdom, Hukum, judgment. The most appropriate, justified, wise Ruler. So there are 4 statements in 1, this is the marvel of the ayah.
The Deen is two things, Allah's wisdom and judgment.
