Democracy vs. Corporations vs. Fascism

A society can have formal trappings of democracy and not be democratic at all. For example, the US is a top-down democracy; it holds elections but leaves traditional structures of power, namely corporations and their allies in effective control.  In the US, policy is insulated from politics. People can have their opinions: they can even vote if they like but policy making goes on its merry way, determined by corporate forces. This is traditionally a fascist system. It can vary in the way it works, but the ideal state that it aims at is absolutist top-down control with the public essentially following orders.
Fascism is a term from the political domain, so it doesn't apply strictly to corporations, but if you look at them, power goes strictly top down from the board of directors to managers to lower managers and ultimately to the people on the shop floor, typists etc. There is no flow of power or planning from the bottom up. Ultimate power resides in the hands of investors, owners, banks etc. People can disrupt, make suggestion, but the same is true of a slave society. People who aren't owners and investors have nothing much to say about it. They can choose to rent their labour to the corporations, or to purchase the commodities or services that it produces, or to find a place in the chain of command, but that's it. That's the totality of their control over the corporation.

At the deepest level, the media contributes to the sense that the government is the enemy; it suppresses the sources of real power in society which are the fascist institutions - the corporations, now internationally in scale - that control the economy and much of our social life. In fact, the corporations set the conditions within which the government operates. This is not an exaggeration: the Republicans tend to be the party of business while the Democrats tend to favour big business over small businesses. We just show up once in a while to cast votes and then go home banking institutions, monied incorporations and businesses run the country.
John Dewey said that democracy is not an end in itself, but a means by which people discover, extend and manifest their human nature and human rights. Democracy is rooted in freedom, solidarity, and the ability to participate in the social order. The real product of democracy is real people doing real work for the welfare of human kind. Today, the top two hundred corporations in the world control over a quarter of the world's total assets, and their control is increasing for their benefit. They are a private, absolutists, fascist and unaccountable power structures.

Given all this, US policies in the Middle East are easy to understand. The US has consistently opposed democracy if it results does not favour a puppet government. Middle Eastern governments, for the most part, respond to the needs of the US investors and corporations, instead of their general populations. A study of the inter-American system published by the Royal Institute  of International Affairs in London concluded that, while the US pays lip service to democracy, the real commitment is to "private, capitalist enterprise." When the rights of investors are threatened, democracy is vanquished: if these rights are safeguarded, killers and tortures remain in power."

Pakistan's Crime rate

There's been a tendency over the last few years for local Pakistani TV news programs to concentrate on crimes, rapes and kidnappings. Crime rate is connected considerably to the declining income of the large majority of the population, and a decline as well in the opportunity for constructive work.
Over the past thirty and forty years, inequality has accelerated, more resources are directed towards the wealthy and the privileged sectors and away from the general population. The result is an increasing crime rate, as well as other signs of social disintegration. Most of the crime is poor people attacking each other, which spills over to upper class neighbourhoods. The rich become apprehensive as their streets become more dangerous.
A constructive approach to the problem would require dealing with the causes of inequality, but that's off government agenda, as it is focused on maximizing profits for the corporations and business class. Therefore the only response the government can afford is pandering to the fear of crime with increasing harshness, attacking civil liberties and attempting to control the poor by force. The government is aimed at wealth production and since the basic ideology is that a person's human rights depend on how much money they can make for themselves in the market system, the poor have no value. They have no form of organization and no viable, constructive way of reacting, so they pursue the only available option: committing crimes to survive.

Response: 6 Corporations Control 90% of the Media in America

We do not have a democratic media, one that involves large-scale public participation that reflects public interests and real values. The United States may be a skewed electoral democracy of sorts, but it does not allow equality of communication and publication. In 2012, Business Insider ran an online article explaining how 6 corporations control 90% of the Media in America.
The US media does not want its population to become decision-makers and participants : they want a passive, obedient population of consumers and political spectators - a community of people who are so atomized and isolated who can't put together their limited resources and become an independent, powerful force that will chip away at concentrated power.

Commercially run TV is going to have certain purposes - namely, the ones determined by people who own and control it. This is why for example, the PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) is sometimes called "the Petroleum Broadcasting Service," which is reflective of the interests and power of the highly conscious business system that owns it. Ownership always determines the media content.  If the content ever goes beyond the bounds owners will tolerate, they'll move in to censor it. People on air will do what the owners and investors want. There's a whole, long filtering process that makes sure that people only rise through a system to become managers, directors, editors and actors, if they have internalized the values of the owners.  At that point, they can describe themselves as free press or free media. So you'll occasionally find some flaming independent-liberal type like Tom Wicker of NY Times who says that no one tells him what to write, he can write whatever he wants and that he is a part of a absolutely free system. That may be true for him after he has demonstrated to the satisfaction of his bosses that he'd internalized their values.

Letter to Prime Minister Steven Harper

Dear Prime Minister Steven Harper,

I am a Teacher from Scarborough Ontario. I became a teacher because I simply love kids. I feel eternally privileged to watch a new generation of Canadians grow and do my part in impacting their developmental stages positively. I groom their conscientiousness with love, good quality education and inspiration, in an attempt to make them focused and purposeful individuals for the future.  As a teacher it is also my responsibility to report child neglect and child abuse to the right authorities.
For this reason, I like to humbly bring to your attention towards the murder of over 600 Palestinian children in their own homes, schools and hospitals, including UN shelters by Israeli Defense Force over the past seven weeks. Israel has one of the largest militarises in the world and a flourishing weapons’ industry financed by the US and Canada, which is being employed to to take the lives of innocent children. Many Canadian companies including Alphacasting Inc. based in St. Laurent Quebec manufacture key components for the weapons system used by the Israeli military to harm innocent Palestinian children. In 2012, the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) invested $3 million in Israel corp.
IDF soldiers brag about killing children on instagram. This is on par with Senior government figure Feiglin advise to Prime Minister Netanyahu on his facebook page to annihilate the entire Gaza strip. Richard Falk, former UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian territories says, Israel is guilty of war crimes. Prime Ministers from many countries including Bolivia, El Salvador, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil have all withdrawn their ambassadors from Israel in protest.

The open-ended cease-fire agreement does not demilitarize Israel, which remains an ongoing threat to the safety and security of children in Palestine. I urge you to stop Canada from arming Israel and stop Jewish Canadians from leaving Canada to join IDF. The manufacture and sales of arms confirm Canada is not following its legacy of peacemaking in violent conflicts. Canada should help disarm Israel. I call on you to dissuade Israel  and Jewish Canadians from authorizing the use of force against unarmed kids and their parents. I urge you to work with the United Nations in support of economic and diplomatic measures towards peace and justice for all Palestinian.
As a new school year is starting and I am preparing my classroom, I cannot fathom, even in a nightmare, the mass destruction of my innocent students. It is the natural disposition of every teacher and human alike to care for and protect their young. I am sure as a parent, you are also troubled by the outlandish havoc the children of Palestine have endured in the last two months. I hope you can help Canada seek a non-military solution and peaceful compromise in this threatening time.

Sincerely,
Asfiya Irfan

ISIS and US foreign policy

In Iraq, the US is conducting aerial attacks along with flying over military advisers and trainers to help defeat the advance of ISIS. In Syria, US policy is the exact opposite; US is funding ISIS rebels against the Assad government. If this does not leave you scratching your head then you have no qualms understanding that the US government creates and finances extremists groups as proxies to fight its battles at home and abroad.

Obama encouraged the growth of ISIS in Syria by sending thousand of dollars in aid, guns and other weaponry to overthrow Assad. When the same ISIS group invaded Iraq, Obama started contemplating sending green-lighted F-16 bombing raids to quell their uprising. When Obama wanted regime change in Syria, he used ISIS as a de-facto ally. Since Obama does not want regime change in Iraq, because the US maintains a good command over Iraqi politics, he is criticizing ISIS operation in the region. As long as ISIS was helping the US interests in Syria, Obama certified and supported its murderous rampage. Now when ISIS is upsetting the US order in Iraq (especially the oil-rich autonomous zone in the Northwest),  ISIS is labelled as a jihadist movement, worst than al-Qaeda.

It is clear that the US foreign policy has little to do with humanitarianism and more with boasting its military and corporate power.

As Woodrow Wilson's Secretary  of State had already pointed out 60 years earlier, "the United States considers its own interests. The integrity of other American nations is an incident, not an end." Wilson applied this world-view when he invaded Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where his warriors murdered and destroyed the countries' political systems, establishing US corporations firmly in their places, and setting the stage for brutal and corrupt puppet dictatorships. What's happening in Syria and Iraq is no different.

Suicide

When Robin Williams was found dead in an apparent suicide on August 11, one of the first sensations that rushed through my mind was immense guilt. One of the most clearly talented actors and signature comedians of the last 30 years had killed himself, and I did not give him da'wah. Call it dumb but I feel that Robin Williams had a right on us, he entertained us through his comedies, family films, dramas, animation and blockbuster pieces. He made us laugh and cry; he taught us various sensibilities. He deserved that we do something for him, he deserved an invitation from us to worship Allah.
Those who die without believing in Allah are going to a place where they will be tormented forever in chambers of hell where the fire does not subside and they will be separated from Allah and His love for all eternity without any chance or return. Many Muslims find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that Allah could allow His creation to go to hell fire, in clear terms Allah says,

"Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - never would the [whole] capacity of the earth in gold be accepted from one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it. For those there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers." [Qur'an 3:91]

Death is an inevitable phenomenon. Daily, hundreds of thousands of people die due to geo-ecomonic conflicts and political skirmishes without Allah in their lives. The truth is that they may be going to hell. Da'wah work must, therefore, be given top priority by Muslims and Masajid generally. Imagine the teeming celebrity population of Hollywood, a number of actors, musicians and athletes worldwide who died battling substance abuse or depression and those who are still alive without Allah. Their life should not be in vain. We must not allow Ibless to populate hell. Hence, the need for Muslims to engage in da'wah work all over the world. We must leave the TV and other screens to save ourselves and others' souls from hell.

Response: Michael Brown shooting: How Ferguson botched crowd control of protests

Ferguson: what is the role of police agencies? What is the role of the Government?

Is the police obliged to fulfil its social contract with the public? What happens when the police starts hunting people instead of keeping them secure? What happens when an overwhelmingly white police force and political establishment governs over Black and Brown cities and suburbs across the United States?

The killing of 400 civilians of a specific ethnic group by the police force in 2013 suggests that civil liberties and protection are fritted away by unruly policing method substituting military techniques. Why are there armoured vehicles in a Midwestern inner suburb? Why are cops wearing camouflage gear against a terrain patterned by convenience stores and beauty parlours?  Why are the authorities in Ferguson given to quasi-martial crowd control methods (curfews and bans on the street, firing tear gas at people in their own yards)? The use of flash grenades by the police against Ferguson's night protesters, mounted roadblocks at city limits and media censorship is reminiscent of the occupied territory of Gaza during the ongoing Israeli attacks.

There is a suggestion here that the execution of law and order has become akin to fighting a war. Ironically the Black Americans are at the receiving end of anti-terror funding and training at home as the Muslims of the Arab world are abroad. The burgeoning police burtality in Michael Brown's murder – shot 6 times for jaywalking? He was on his knees, with his hands up and head down when he was already shot twice and then shot 3 more times in the head point blank. The extra-judicial killing of unarmed 23-year-old Jacorey Calhoun and the video-taped police murder of Eric Garner in New York City shows that the police are indeed inflicting civilians with the same terror tactics as used by the military in war.

A police state that internationally engages in acts of terrorism will inevitably take vigilante style, punitive measures against its minority communities. Achieving justice, whether overseas or at home means confronting those in power. Homosexuals and abortion gets all air-time during an election campaign while ideological, ethnic, education, unemployment issues are marginalized. We should put pressure on the political leadership of US to halt police and military aggression and racial and economic injustice everywhere.

Response: Canadians in Terrorist armies threaten us all

There is a long history of Canadians serving in the IDF. Israelis are required to serve in their military, so young Canadians living their dual citizenship do so as well. I think this should be illegal under Canadian law.

Many Jewish Canadians join the IDF through programs like Garin Tzabar, which provides a framework for Jews (ages 18-23) across the world to move to Israel and join the military. They are Jewish Canadian citizens who get free handouts: free high school education and enjoy free health care along with many other benefits and freedoms afforded to Canadians, only to provide military service to another country. I think this is a betrayal of their citizenship oath. They are not only abusing government facilities, which provide for their needs but they are also jeopardizing Canadian foreign policies. These Jewish Canadian citizens are drawing Canada into international hostilities against countries with which we are uninvolved. They are committing war crimes in Palestine; helping Israel exterminate/colonize an indigenous people then escaping accountability by returning to Canada under its citizenship grab. These people are ungoverned individuals who pose a threat to peace at home and abroad. They are hotbeds of terrorism.

If it is illegal for Somali Canadians and Arab Canadians to militarily support revolutions in their countries, then it should not be okay for Jewish Canadians to kill Palestinians in Gaza. I think the government of Canada should denounce the radicalization of Jewish Canadians in Israeli wars. The government should monitor Jewish networks that recruit and radicalize Jewish youth. Moreover, Jewish Canadians should be charged, fined, jailed (their citizenship revoked) – whatever necessary- to stop them from serving in the IDF.
Toronto Couple Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman provide $3 billion per year for post-military scholarships for Jewish Canadian soldiers. The RCMP and CISIS should seize and dissolve their Heseg Foundation and all other so-called charities which provide financial banking to the Israeli army.

I stand with Dr. Tariq Ramadan

Dr. Tariq Ramadan is a Sufi Thinker who made a very valid point against the Muslim scholarship of RIS and ISNA. What role, if any, does Muslim scholarship play in the political discourse of the 21nd century?
Despite having guidance from Qur'an and hadith and a large conversion rate in North America, I think a majority of Muslims sport a herd mentality when it comes to religion and politics. We do what the scholars and the government say is right without thinking for ourself at all.

I think it is justified to say that normal, hard-working people hate paying taxes, but we pay taxes anyway. Not only is the tax paying process is ever-complicated; you have to fill out anywhere between 77 pages after reading 180 pages of appendix filled with instructions but it is also unfair. The wealthy don't pay their fair share of taxes. Cooperations either sport an effective lower tax rate than the general public or do not pay taxes at all. For example, in 2012 General Electric, Facebook and FedEx didn't pay their taxes. Taxes on national gains are lower than income tax: investors pay less than you do in income tax.  Canada Tax and Revenue agency is so powerful it can revoke your passport and your citizenship; it can jail or deport you.

Each year, the government collects over $299 billion in taxes, of which $26.3 billion is spent on paying off its' oligarchy (Old Age Security program), $22.5 billion on federal agencies (including Bank of Canada and Royal Canadian Mint),  $19.7 billion on the army, navy and air forces, $13.9  billion on international policing operations, $8.1 billion on RCMP, CISIS and border services.

The US collected $22.7 trillion in Tax revenue in 2013.

American Military Aid to Israel:  Aiding and Abetting Israeli War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Israel GDP per capita: $38,700 (more than Japan)
Annual U.S. military aid to Israel: $3.6 Billion ($3.1B in direct military aid and $504 million in subsidies to Israeli military industries)
Amount of weapons and munitions US sent to Israel since its 2012 war on Gaza:  $276 million not including exports of military transport equipment and high technologies
Amount of stockpile of ammunition the US military stores in Israel for that country’s use (called War Reserve Stockpile Ammunition-Israel): $1 Billion
Amount of rocket launchers, guided missiles, bombs, grenades and munitions of war US sent to Israel between January and May 2014: $37 million
Congressional Vote to give Israel $225 million in emergency military aid in early August 2014:  House of Representatives: 395 to 8; Senate: 100 to 0.
Gaza: Indiscriminate Israeli War Crimes against Palestinians
Number of Gazans killed by Israel: 1,943 (with 80 percent  civilian casualties including 437 children and 243 women)
Number of Gazans wounded by Israel: 9,886
Number of Houses Destroyed: 5,622; Damaged: at least 36,700
Number of Mosques Destroyed: 64; Damaged: 152
Number of Churches Damaged: 2
Number of Schools or Educational Facilities Destroyed or Damaged: 189
Number of Hospitals or Medical Facilities Destroyed or Damaged: 24
Number of Structures Destroyed including the only Electric Power Plant:More than 1500
Egypt: A Brutal Military Coup
Number of people arrested by the coup regime from July 3, 2013 to May 31, 2014: 41,163 (By April 2014 only 9,220 have been tried with about1,260 receiving death sentences in mass trials)
Syria: a Bloody Civil War Fueled by Sectarianism and Foreign Interference
Number of people killed in the Syrian civil war between March 2011 and August 2014: 102,082 to 171,509 (between 9,100 to 11,400 are children; and between 5,800 to 7,100 are women)
Number of detainees in the Syrian Civil War: as much as 53,700 (between 617 and 847 died under torture)
Number of Syrian Refugees and Displaced Persons according to the UN by end of July 2014: 2,951,423 (three fourths of which are women and children)

I think a democracy should not  increase the gap between the very wealthy and very poor through taxation. A democracy taxes the working class into poverty. We bear the burden of financing the police and the military which in turn are used to subdue us into paying more to the government. This is sheer exploitation. Additionally, in a democracy I think the working class should have the right to decide how our tax dollars are used.  A century of wars, degradation of human life and the environment is not why I work or why I pay my taxes.

Also, I am eternally thankful to the scholarship of ISNA and RIS for making Islamic knowledge available in the West. However, I think I reserve the right to criticize these scholars who are not speaking against the desecration of Muslim worldwide.

"The ISNA leadership is too often silent, as if paralyzed by fear...with respect to American foreign policy. Its silence over American support for the outlaw and inhuman policies of Israel cannot be justified, even less so after attending an iftar organized by the White House during which President Obama defended Israel while the Israeli ambassador tweeted his delight! We cannot be forever silent...[RIS] ... constitute visible support for the Gulf petro-monarchies or for despots such as al-Sissi in Egypt. This while dictators from Syria to Iraq by way of Egypt are imprisoning, torturing and killing innocents by the thousands" - Tariq Ramadan
We can't learn Islam and then timorously watch it being annihilated all around the world (see statistics above).  Our dignity and sincerity as students and teachers of Islam demands that we critically dialogue with the authorities that oppose us and answer their attacks with justice.

A Single Family Dynasty presides over the American Govenrment

We are all sick and tired of autocracies in the Middle East, the succession of members of the same family to political power. Little did we know that a single family dynasty also presides over the American government. All but one American presidents are descendants of John Plantagenet, King of England 1166.

Some other freaky family dynasties include:

1. The line of King James (the first King of England) can be traced back to include Egyptian Pharaohs, including Rameses II (1295-1228 BC).

2. The son of Philip of Macedonia (382-336 BC) and Olympias was Alexander the Great (356-323 BC).  He learned from Aristotle, who also taught Plato, who taught Socrates. Alexander plundered regions from Greece, Persia, Syria, Phoenicia, Egypt to Babylon. During his rule in Egypt, he founded Alexandria.

3. The Cleopatra (60-30 BC) with Julius Caesar was Ptolemy XIV. She also had twins with Mark Anthony who is connected to Herod the Great and the Roman Piso family (who wrote the Gospel and invented the mythical figure of son-god). The same bloodline includes Constantine who adopted the Nicaea Creed and politically enforced the trinity; King Ferdinand (Spain) and Queen Isabella (Castile) who sponsored Christopher Columbus and his genocide of Abroginal peoples and who sponsored the Spanish Inquisition and the ethnic cleansing of Muslims from Spain.

I am sure all this is a coincidence (sarcasm).

Anyone else tempted to trace back their family ancestry?

As long as
we are under the same moon

Boycott Companies that finance Israeli Defence Forces

I think the proverbial elephant in the room is not boycotting products that finance the Israeli Defence forces (IDF), it is now part of mainstream debate to do so. The dysfunction that no one dares to mention, is that the boycott is too little too late in face of the rich Jewish community which already controls the world through economics. If you think I am overreacting, just browse through the list (posted above). Almost everything that we eat (McDonald fries, Danone yoghurt, Nestle ice-cream, Jaffa dates, Sabra Hammus) to everything we drink (Coca-cola, Starbucks) to things that we use around the house and essentially every commercial building (Lipski plumbing accessories, Allibert bathroom accessories, Curver plastic home and food storage and all products sold under Black & Decker, B&Q brands, IBM, Intel, Motorola) to cosmetic creams and baby lotions (L'OREAL, Garnier, Johnson&Johnson) and personal hygiene products (Huggies diaper, Kotex) are either made by Jewish owned companies or companies which finance the IDF. I am a little bit frightened and shocked at the extent of Jewish monopoly over our day-to-day lives.

Obviously the purpose of this article is not to stereotype the entire world Jewry. First, I object only to the select Jewish supremacists; the category of outrageously fundamentalists, extremists and tyrannical Jews like Moshe Feiglin, Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset and member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling Likud Party, who advocate blatant ethnic cleansing and genocide against Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims. Second, I am surprised that no Palestinian, Arab or Muslim invented anything of value since the twelfth century. We are descendants of a nation who invented coffee, clocks, chess, soap, toothbrush, Camera obscura, fine dining (three course meals), sound system, carpets, school, university and library systems. Concepts of mathematics like numbers, trigonometry, algebra, geometry and chemistry are the brainchild of our respected ancestors. Muslims of the past made breakthroughs in water management, authored first ever manuals in farming, ecology and astronomy. Set up hospitals and medical schools, invented instruments for surgery, discovered the science of blood circulation, cure for bone fractures and drugs for small pox, ear and eye infections. What happened to our ingenuity and creativity today?

feiglin-hateFBThis is a message (left) posted by Feiglin on his Fcaebook page on August 1st, issuing advise to Netanyahu for the destruction of Gaza. Over 8,000 like-minded Jewish fundamentalists and extremists appreciated his action plan.  Feiglin defines the enemy and states: “The strategic enemy is Arab Islam in all its varieties, from Iran to Gaza. The immediate enemy is Hamas.” He says another important part of his plan is the “conquest of the entire Gaza Strip, and annihilation of all fighting forces and their supporters.” In addition, “the supply of electricity and water to the Gaza would be disconnected before being shelled with maximum fire power.” Feiglin explains how the IDF would then “exterminate nests of resistance, in the event that any should remain.”
Feiglin then details how he wants Israel to “turn Gaza into Jaffa, a flourishing Israeli city with a minimum number of hostile civilians.” In 1948 Jaffa was a Palestinian town but there was an exodus of most of its Arab population when it fell to the fledgling Israeli army and Jewish militias. He also then states that the Israeli Defense Force must “find areas on the Sinai border to establish tent encampments…until relevant emigration destinations are determined.”
Feiglin genocidal remarks received no comments from any western politicians or news sources. IDF bombing of UN hospitals and schools in Gaza also went unnoticed precisely because the monopoly of Jewish businesses over Western economies and the control of Jewish lobbies over various segments of the North American and European governments. Their power is so extensive that they can bomb UN institutions without consequence. If this was not daring enough,  Feiglin, a senior Israeli government figure, equivalent of the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives in America is urging and abetting Netanyahu to follow  the footsteps of Mussolini and Hitler to World domination! We should akk feel a little threatened.
One pragmatic way to stop the Jewish fundamentalist war machine is boycotting companies that finance them.
There are 1,053,945 Muslims in Canada and 2,600,000 Muslims in the US alone. Where are our inventions, our products and our companies? Why are we so hooked and dependent on Jewish businesses to meet our day-to-day necessities? I am not sure if this quote can be authentically attributed to Salahuddin Ayyubi, but it is very meaningful in itself and somewhat indicative of the reason of our failure as a nation.  "If you want to destroy any nation without war, make adultery or nudity common in the young generation." You don't have to look far, just examine the condition of Muslim kids in your family and neighbourhoods. What are their musings? How much TV (music, video games, movies, facebook pictures) do they watch and in comparison how many hours do they study? In contrast, after highschool Jewish kids from around the world obtain a two year mandatory military training with the IDF.  Canadian youth of Jewish descent are in Israel right now fighting alongside the IDFThey are over represented in elite universities across North America, subsequently, they lead the most businesses, companies and politically powerful positions.
Therefore, I sincerely urge everyone, to not think that they have done their civic duty by denouncing Israeli fundamentalism on Facebook, or by boycotting Coca-cola you have achieve something significant. These are only the first step. There is a lot more that needs to be done to ensure the safety of Muslims from Israeli genocidal agenda. We need to a become economically independent. We need Muslim privately owned cooperations to replace the goods and services provided by Jewish extremists. We also need to re-read the biography of Salahuddin, the Liberator of Palestinebecome like Salahuddin (think like him, speak like him, worship like him, conduct ourselves with others like he did)  and raise our sons and daughters to be like Salahuddin.

O Allah raise hundreds and thousands of Salahuddin in this Ummah, in words, actions and victory aameen.

Beautiful Masajid around the World

Experiencing a sense of impeccable peace and happiness, I would say that my feelings when in a Masjid is like being in Heaven on Earth. Masjid is a great place to emotionally unwind  and spiritually energize oneself after long week of hard work and stress.
Some Masajid are really spectacular in the way they are designed and a treat to visit. The following are pictures from Nasir al-Mulk Masjid in Shiraz, Iran. The entire Masjid is an artistic master piece by Hasan-e-Memar and Muhammad Reza Kashi Paz-e-Shirazi. Every morning rays of the sun fall upon the Masjid, transforming its interior structure into a Paradise of colours.

The following link contains 3-D pictures of colossal, magnificent Masajid from around world, a marvel in architectural designs and breathtaking colour schemes. They are worth seeing in person but pictures are the next best thing.

Caution: Test in Progress

The image of the 21st century Muslim women, confident, prosperous, glowing with health and knowledge is only true in books and lectures. The reality is that Muslim women don't see the perks of the rights promised to them in Islam. Women continue to feel the age-old lash of violence, repression, isolation, enforced ignorance and discrimination. In  spite of the fact that many Muslim women are now better educated, earn a lot more money and participate in politics, they are still subjected to pain and attacks in the domestic sphere.
In a vast majority of my public halaqahs to young girls, I have often reiterated how lucky we are to be born Muslims because of all the rights Allah has given us in Islam. I am sorry ladies, I take all that back. Muslim women are the most vulnerable and most undermined by their families.

Dear Muslim Girls,

1. The moment you share your grievances with a family member, you will be told to be patient.
The most likely response you will hear is: (a) It is all in your head. You need to think positive and
(b) Be patient. The number of years you have quietly suffered is irrelevant.

2. If your are suffering because of an adult in your family (aunt, uncle, grandparent, in-laws) then you are not allowed to communicate your feelings to them or anyone else besides them. You are the problem, all adults are infallible. So to think that they have done something wrong is utterly blasphemous. You should probably do towbah (repent).

3. Boys will be boys. The solution to their sinful conduct towards you is giving them more space, love and respect.

4. Asking for anything monetary, even if it is under $5 will make you the equivalent of Cruella de Vil in your family.

5. Your function at home is to cook fabulous 5 course buffet meals everyday, three times a day. Your house is nothing short of a restaurant. If you are not in the kitchen by 9:00 am and if you leave the kitchen before 12:00 am then you are lazy, spoiled, snobbish piece of garbage. Your family will see you as a fool and a failure in life.

6. You will always be judged by your weight, height, skin colour and clothes. Your appearance will be the subject of all family gatherings. These 4 factors alone will determine how will-liked or out-casted you are in the family.

7. You cannot go anywhere at any time.

8. You can never express your anger. This right is exclusively reserved for men.

9. You can never respond to an angry person. You must listen to their nuisance in its entirety without a single objection. Then you must accept the blame for everything and finally smile and nod in compliance to their orders.

10. Your likes and dislikes are decided by your family. You have no say in the things you want to do or do not want.

You can't be a girl and happy. Your life will never be fair or free. Therefore, I understand your disappointment ladies and your inclination to rebel. I cannot console you with any better words than the truth. The reality is that we are being tested. We have rights in Islam but we cannot practice them in the East or West. Even well to do religious families would rather see their daughters suffer than help them. Silence takes precedence over action. All I can say is that you are not alone.

Not that Iblees is analogues to women. I am using the following story only as an example. At first, it didn't make any sense to Iblees to prostrate to Adam, a novice mud statue, when he was a fierce, fire breathing entity and an experienced worshipper who was celebrated in the heavens. This was his test. He failed because he was overwhelmed by his self-worth and reasoning. He rebelled against Allah out of anger and sinned. In the same way, it is a test from Allah to listen to our family when they purposely discriminate against our rights. They will hurt and offend us, a thousand rebuttals will procure in our mind but its futile to cry or to argue with them. You don't have to agree with what your family is doing. You just have to bear it as a form of test from Allah. Sure enough the situation will pass (with difficulty comes ease, no hardship lasts forever). Allah will certainly reward you.

When I am forced to do something which I think is unfair, I remember Ovais alQarni. He missed the opportunity to be with the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) because he had to look after his ageing mother. (I think every girl has multiple sob stories of how she was held back in her life because of her gender.) Allah appreciated the sacrifice Ovais made for his family. Whenever he would raise his hands and ask Allah for anything, Allah would give it to him. For this reason, Muhammad (s.a.w) prohesized to Umar (r.a) that 'when Ovais comes to Madinah, ask him to make duaa for you because Allah fulfils his request'. I feel that when we become as humble and selfless towards our family like Ovais alQarni, Allah will bring us close to Him and fill our lives with His blessings and mercy aameen.

Raising a Polar Bear

As of late, I have come to find animals as a cheerful diversion. They are so mysterious and beautiful. Watching them play and rest is therapeutically peaceful and calming. Thomas seems to love his time grooming and playing with Knut (see video on the left). He is white as snow with saucy black eyes and nose. MashAllah he has the most endearing ways of purring and snuggling.

Not too long ago, I adopted two kittens, Oscar and Layla. They become a source of emotional strength and confidence for me. They gave me balance in life, I was able to do something recreational from home. They would curl up next to me, sometimes playing and biting my toes then falling asleep next to my feet while I studied.

Layla
Oscar
Oscar was a pretty kitten, with peculiarly sleek glossy fur of dark yellow crossed with orange stripes, and large, satiny, golden ears. He was frolicsome kitten and stubborn at times. Layla had black and white stripes, she was a unique tabby who had these mascara lines on her eyes which made her look truly exotic. She was kind and friendly. I loved her soft voice. Her favourite activity was getting her belly brushed and tickled.

Their bodies grew slowly and steadily but my love for them grew by leaps and bounds. They would look at me with their large eyes full of glee and promise. The most rosy and rainbowy moment of my day would be when they would chase after me. Their images still dance in my memory. I will forever miss their contended purring and innoence.

What can I do for Palestine?

In the grand scheme of things, how can I make a difference in the world? Many of us troubled by the genocide in Palestine are repeatedly tortured by this question, "What can I do?"

Sometimes when you read what's happening in the world today, your stress level goes high and you feel the need for a short escape to recharge your positive energy. What I personally do is read Islamic History. In it, I find the comfort of knowing how the Ummah has dealt with similar situations before, and it also helps me in deciding what my role is in making the Ummah better. I then close the book and go back to the reality of our world, but much more energized to get things done and contribute in the best possible way. Try it!

To know my role, I analyze the following:
1- What talents and strengthens Allah gave me, and what weaknesses I have.
2- What are the Ummah's biggest needs, and where do I fit in.
3- What are the opportunities, and what are the obstacles.
4- What help is available to me, from friends and family.
5- What is the most unique thing that I could do, that not many other people could do.

Insha'Allah if you analyze this, and keep trying (no one is expected to get things right the first few times), and keep asking Allah for guidance to help you, you will know what's the best role you could have, and Allah will shape you into that role as long as you keep working hard and learning from your mistakes while consistently educating yourself.

To the Glories of Motherhood and Homemaking

I don't know how to thank you enough...

You were physically tired and exhausted, internally angry and frustrated. Still you did not take any day off. You continued to mind the the house with grace and patience. You were not given a choice, full time home-making sort of happened after marriage and you picked up the entire load. No one else shared the responsibilities with you, there was no help offered, not even occasionally. You sustained yourself on prayers alone. You did not take out the time to rest and recuperate. You set yourself high: you educated your kids, prayed with your kids, kept everything clean, you did all the shopping, you organized all the parties, you did all the handyman's work too. You adrenaline burnt out and stress took over.

InshaAllah when your children grow up, they will be immensely sensitive to your
endeavours. They will devout themselves to you for giving them birth, being there for them at home and running errands for them. Hopefully some day, you will feel proud in being a busy wife when you see your kids' achievements, especially when you see them excel in the Deen. You deserve the glory of your children's success. You prepared them for it. Marriage was tedious and demanding but through it, you produced children who inshaAllah will make the world a better place.

This article highlights the life of four  relentless home-makers who changed the world through their children. I am dedicating the stories of the Mothers of Hafsah ibn Sireen, Rabi'a arRaii' Imaam Malik and Imaam Shafai', first to my mom, and second to all wives and mothers who are surviving abuse and neglect at home. I pray that these stories can become an inspiration out of your confusion and pain. Give power to the powerless. Fill the empty spirit. Heal the wounds, free you from fear and restore you to true health. Strengthen you to face the future with faith and positive reliance upon Allah aameen.

I salute you!

Mother of Imaam Mohammad Ibn Sireen
Saffiyyah was a freed slave of Abu Bakr (r.a) and his student. Very few scholars had the privilege to learn from Abu Bakr (r.a) because he lived for a very short period of time (only two years as a khaleef) and naturally he was too occupied with governing the Muslim state to teach anyone formally. After Abu Bakr (r.a) passed away, Saffiyyah became a student of Aisha (r.a). She earned so much prominence and respect as a scholar in Madina that her funeral was attended by all the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) who were alive at that time (3), and all the living the veterans of Badr (18) and her janazah was led by Ubbay ibn Ka'ab (r.a).

Saffiyah was a relentless home-maker and mother of four kids. She made her daughter Hafsah, presumably her first-born, memorize the Qur'an at the age of 9. Thereafter she taught Hafsah Qira'aat (different modes of recitation) by the age of 12. Soon she became a scholar of Qur'an and Hadith. Later Hafsah schooled her three brothers Muhammad ibn Sireen, Yahya and Anas in the sciences of Qur'an and Hadith, which she learned from Saffiyah. Hafsah also taught most of the Taba'een (generation after the sahaba ra). Almost every Taba'ee, who lived in Iraq, learned at least one narration from Hafsah. She had a musallah (prayer place) in her house where she spent 30 years worshipping Allah. She would only take a break to teach her students and to eat and drink.

One of her students, Abdul Kareem ibn al Mua'awiyah said, "Hafsah would read half of the Qur'an every night in Qiyaam al Layl. During Ramadan she would finish the entire Qur'an every night in Qiyaam al Layl."
She used to fast every day except for the 2 Ei'dain and the days of Tashreeq. Her son Hudail would carry firewood to her house, warm her through the fire and learn the Qur'an and Hadith from her.

Ilyaas ibn Muaawiyah said, "I have not met anyone more knowledgeable than Hafsah."
He was asked, what about Hasan al Basri (Syed alTabi'een - the Chief or Master of Tab'een in Islamic understanding) or her brother Mohammad ibn Sireen. He admitted, "Neither of them were as knowledgeable as her."
Hishaam ibn Hassaan said, "If you put the minds of Hasan al Basri and Mohammad ibn Sireen together, they would equal the mind of Hafsah in her intelligence, her aqaal, her qiyaas and the way she was able to put things together."

Mother of Rabi’a arRa’ii
In 51 A.H arRabi'a ibn Ziyaad alHarthi, the great general and conqueror led armies to Khurasaan and Azerbaijan. Rabi’a was so pleased upon the conquest of Azerbaijan that he offered 2 raka’ah in Salah to give thanks to Allah, then he freed his right-hand man and soldier, Farooq. He also gave Farooq 30,000 dinaar (gold coins) to start a new life outside of the military.
Farooq was really thrilled. He travelled to Basra then Madina where he decided to get married. He proposed and settled down. A week after he heard the Khaleefah calling to arms against the Byzantine Empire. He quickly got his armour ready but felt really depressed at the thought of leaving behind his first true love. She encouraged him to respond to the higher call and fulfil his vocation. He glanced at his wife one last time with a sinking heart, she bid him farewell with a supporting smile.

It so happened that Farooq never came back home. He continued one military expedition after another for 16 years. Such a long service was unprecedented at the time, he was an exception.

When circumstances allowed, he finally returned home. At the door he was greeted by young man who attacked him with a sword. Farooq wrestled the boy around his house for a while until noise and commotion reached all corners of Medina. Scholars like Imam Malik and Imaam Layth ibn Sa’ad rushed to stop the two assailants from killing each other. A woman finally emerged from inside one of the rooms in the house; she could not believe her fortune. She told Farooq the young man was her son. The two men put down their weapons and embraced each other for the first time as father and son.

That night Farooq and his wife caught up on the missed 16 years. During the
conversation, Farooq curiously inquired about his 30,000 gold coins, which he had entrusted to his wife before leaving for battle. His wife lovingly gestured him not to worry and that he will be pleasantly surprised soon.
The next morning, Farooq saw his son leading Salah in Masjid anNabwi (s.a.w). Later he saw his son surrounded by grown men whom he taught the Masjid. Obviously Farooq felt really proud. He approached his son and asked what had he had done in the past years? The son introduced himself as Rabi’a arRaii; Rabi’a ibn Abdur Rahman, 16 year old Imaam and Mufti of Madina and teacher of Imaam Malik.

His mother had spent the 30,000 gold coins in sponsoring  his education. She traveled with him to all the ends of Iraq, Syria and Makkah so he could learn from the finest Ulema of the time. At each location she waited sometimes months and years, for him, to graduate. His mother was a relentless home-maker whose sacrifices bequeathed this Ummah the likes of Imaam Malik and Imaam Shafai’.

Mother of Imaam Malik
The father of Imaam Malik was a Taba'ee, student of Ali ibn Abi Talib (r.a). His mother was Aaliyah bint Shareeq alAsdiyah. She was pregnant with Imaam Malik for over 12 months. It was a very unusual and risky pregnancy, Aaliyah used to make duaa for him. Imaam Malik was born in Madina, an Albino with bleached skin and light hair.
As a boy, Imaam Malik did not want anything to do with ilm, he didn’t care about halaqaat and duroos. He didn’t care about going to the Masjid at all. He wanted to be a singer. He used to waste his time playing with pigeons. Pigeons were the ps4 of that time– engaging and entertaining. His father thought Imama Malik would grow up to be a failure and a fool.  His mother however, would patiently sit him down and talk to him. Eventually she walked him through it and changed his mind. She convinced him to study, that like singing, knowledge would also make him famous but he will enjoy the knowledge and benefit other people with it.

Everyday his mother would wrap an amamah around his head and dress him in the
garment of scholars (thobe), then instruct him to sit with Rabi’a arRaii to learn manners and knowledge from him. When he would come home, she would ask him what he had learned. Subsequently he would narrate ahadith and masail from Rarbi’a arRaii. Eventually he fell in love with his teacher and developed a passion for knowledge. The world would not have had Imaam Malik if his mother did not convince him to take this path. All the history of Imaam dar alHijrah, the fatawa of Malik in Madina and Muwatta Imaam Malik would be lost without the eagerness and enthusiasm which his relentless mother.

Mother of Imaam Shafai’
Imaam Shafai’s name was Muhammad ibn Idrees asShafa'i. He was born an orphan in Gaza in 150 AH, the same year as Imam Abu Hanifa passed away. At the time Gaza was called Gazatu Hashim because the city was the burial site of the Prophet’s (s.a.w) great grandfather.
Imaam Shafai’s mother was Fatimah bint Abdullah bin Hasan bint al Hasan bint Ali ibn abi Talib. She was a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) through the lineage of Ali (r.a).
When Imaam Shafai’ was around 2 years old, she decided to take him back to Makkah to introduce him to his maternal uncles and to expose him to the knowledge of the Deen. Imaam Shafai’ recalls that his mother travelled alone with him from Gaza to Makkah, something which was very rare for women at the time because of the dangers involved in traversing through the desert. She said to him, “We are poor people and we don't have any money. I am not going to get remarried for you. I am going to put you into ilm and I am hoping Allah will benefit the Ummah through you.”

When he was only 4 years old, Fatimah helped him memorize the Qur’an. When he was a little older, she used to take him to different Halaqat in Makkah.
She didn't have any money to pay for his tuition so she used to take him early to the Masjid before the class would begin. Imaam Shafai’ would remain at the back and quietly sit behind all the students while the teachers spoke. He felt very insignificant and ignored. The teachers knew that he had not paid tuition so they did not interact with him during the class.
Imaam Shafai’ would come home upset because of the lack of attention he was getting in class. Fatimah told him to present himself to knowledge. It didn’t matter if the teachers did take any notice of him and made him feel small. His goal was to seek knowledge; therefore he should focus on acquiring knowledge, not his social status and popularity. She advised him to enter the class with adab and not offend anyone with his actions. His good manners will earn him respect.  Imaam Shafai’ said, his mother was the driving source behind his motivation. Whenever he lost courage, his mother pushed him right back up on the pedestal.

Once he complained to his mother about not having ink
(they were too poor to afford simple things),
Fatimah suggested that he should memorize the lecture notes. So Imaam Shafai’ committed every word out of his teachers’ mouth to memory. He kept repeating the entire lecture word for word to himself in order to memorize it. When the teacher would go for a break, the other students would approach him and question him about his strange mumbling habit. Imaam Shafai’ would recite the entire lecture, verbatim from start to finish. When the teacher discovered his unique talent, they offered to give him extra attention on condition that he would teach the class in their absence.
Another teacher felt that it was haram to accept any tuition from little Shafai' because of his superior intelligence. Imaam Shafai’ became a TA (teacher’s assistant) at the age of 6. Once when he was teaching Fiqh of Siyaam in the Masjid during Ramadan, someone asked why he was drinking water during the class (he should have been fasting). To this Imam Shafai’ replied, he was not yet baaligh (he had not reached the age of puberty and so fasting was not obligatory for him).

Fatimah was relentless, she would collect bones for Imaam Shafai. She would go to recycling centers where the government disposed its paper and gather drops of ink until she could fill an entire cup for him to use. She would pursue the scholars, show up at the their doorsteps to intercede on her sons’ behalf so they would teach him. He studied the entire Muwatta under Imaam Malik.

Ibn Hajr praised Fatimah saying that she was a scholar in her own right. All the women of her vicinity would come to her with their issues.
