This Surah acknowledges that his (s.a.w) troubles are difficult but they will get better. It is a consolation. Allah explicitly describing the favour He does for Muhammad (s.a.w).
The Surah was revealed in response to the sharp comments she made against the Prophet (s.a.w). He (s.a.w) has an enormous amount of pressure because if Islam does not go through, not just the Quresh but the entire human race is doomed to hellfire. So he is not only desperate to convince them but he is constantly blaming himself for not being good enough to convey the message properly. When revelation stop coming, the Kuffar started chuckling amongst themselves that Allah is displeased with him and the Prophet (s.a.w) starts believing that maybe he did something wrong.
وَالضُّحَىٰ
The time of Day that is full of life, activity, and movement (its after fajr). The light of the sun is something soothing, beautiful.
When the revelation used to come to him, it was a soothing light
The soothing light represents the revelation and the effect of illumination it has people.
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ
When the night is still.
Both times of morning and dead of the night are needed, alludes to different phases in life. It is important part of night to go through darkness, likewise going through hardship is part of life. We never get to harness and develop good qualities that only comes out in bad times. Only when something is taken away, then we become grateful.
The choice of language is very soft, it illustrates love for the prophet (s.a.w).
The night refers to the cutting of the revelation (discontinuation/interval). It was like the night because it became still.
مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ
Alweed3a - final goodbye, never coming back, final ticket.
Allah has not permanently bid you forever.
Maa is a emphatically declaration = Allah never said goodbye at all. Allah is convincing the Prophet (s.a.w) by giving absolute certainty because the Prophet (s.a.w) was afraid that Allah is displeased with him so Allah left him.
This word وَدَّعَ is used only when two people say goodbye each other, its an emotional thing. Forget abandoning, Allah didn't even loving leave you. He is your Master, He is in control of you, He gives you gifts, He takes care of you, He is incharge of you, why would He say farewell to you. In the most loving sense Allah has not left you and He has no reason to leave you.
قَلَىٰ when you are unhappy with someone and you discontinue communication with them. It is a transitive verb, its needs an object. Being displeased is between people that are at a conflict with each other. Goodbye is not a negative term so the mention of the messenger (s.a.w) is there but since hate/displease gives negative, the prophet's (s.a.w) name is refrained from to denote his honour. Allah is not displeased with anything related to your mention and not your followers either.
When the revelation used to come to prophet (s.a.w), it used to be like a soothing morning for him while the interval between the revelation was like death to him, endless depression, a still night.
وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَّكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ
Really the Hereafter is better, I swear, for sure the next life is better. Allah is using a convincing tone (the strength of the language conveys the state of the hereafter).
The latter part of his mission is better (become easier) while the earlier bit of his prophethood is hard and it has already happened. This is despite the torture and persecution didn't happen yet. The psychological hardship is the greatest because at this time of revelation he was the only one speaking the truth about Islam. He was called mad, possessed etc It was hard for him to convey the message. He was always shot down by his own family, neighbours and all those who have known him his entire life.
لَّكَ - especially for him it is better. He (s.a.w) gets maqam al mahmood, al kawthar (he gets things that no one gets in the hereafter). He will (s.a.w) get so khayr, the likes of which has never been given to anyone before (the victory of Islam in his lifetime, the cleansing of the House of Allah till Day of Judgment, everywhere in the world, his name taken and with respect, every good done on this world is a sadaqa-e-jariyah to him. We emulate him and he get the reward).
وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَىٰ
سَوْفَ is longer away than saa. Sowfa means a little later. he (s.a.w) will soon in a little bit his gifts but there is the time in the middle in which there is work to do.
Allah didn't mention what He will give. Allah made the giving absolute and did not put any limits on it. Its a blank cheque, you will be happy, trust me.
عْطِي - to give a lot and not take it back, you have full rights over what is given to you (you have no responsibility - you can do whatever you want. There are no strings attached).
There are pages and pages of commentaries on this ayah, suggesting that this special, incredible gift, exclusive to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) is the right to intercession and the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) will be satisfied in his duaa. There is another narration that the Prophet (s.a.w) will present a case against some people saying, "these people took the Qur'an as a joke" - they abandoned this Qur'an. So don't think you will be saved with the Prophet's intercession (s.a.w). He might be the one making duaa against you, instead of defending you. And Allah will satisfy this duaa as well. Think about this with a sound heart.
Amazing rhetorical language.
أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَىٰ
Didn't Allah, He found you an orphans? Its like Allah saying, I am reliable and I have proven my reliability to you already. Didn't I take care of you? Don't worry about it. The Prophet (s.a.w) is reassured about the future and now the case is made about his past.
eewaa (آوَىٰ) gave him shelter, made him a guest.
