Surah Takathur - Highlights

Allah opened this Surah with the reason why people will be in Hellfire.
أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ
أَلْهَا  - laam haa wow - entertainment. That which keeps you busy and takes you away from what you should be doing.
To be distracted and pulled away from something. كَاثُرُ - excess, a lot لتَّكَاثُرُ the desire to have a lot (distracted you). Constantly comparing yourself with others. Its cut throat rivalry. Its the urge to show off. You brag about what you have though no one has asked you about it because this is your identity. The only time you feel alive is when you have something you can rub on someone's face. You want to be known as the one who has the most in terms of this or that.  But the more we run after people, the more empty we feel from inside. We think that the next thing will be enough, will make us happy but after a few days of getting it, we get bored and move on to chasing the next new thing. People wait all night sometimes for some phone or tickets. They get plastic surgery to look like someone they are not. The houses are over flowing with stuff and nothing satisfies their crave.
حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ
زُرْتُ - zee-arah, to meet, and hug. to visit.
We never go to the graves until we are being transferred there, moving in.
كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِي
الْيَقِينِ - solid conviction, unflinching commitment. Stronger than imaan. It is something you are so convinced of that you are deep inside satisfied with it. For sure as yesterday. Its an absolute premise, you don't go back and revisit it again.
Allah is expressing regret. Had you only known knowledge of certainty.
We believe in death but we aren't really convinced that we'll die ever.
لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ
The stare of the lion that is about to eat you. The prey gets terrified that it is not about to run anyway because it is caught by the eyes. The flames of hellfire will stare at you. You will def. def. def. see hellfire, you'll have to look at in the eyes.
ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ
You will be asked about the blessings you used to enjoy. Say astaghfirullah i will be asked about my really nice house, my really fast car.
We are confused because we think more is better when in fact more distracts us from thinking about our death and preparing for the hereafter. If we remember that Allah will hold us accountable for everything that we have, even a glass of water, then these blessings will keep us on tract. These things are a track. We need to return them with an answer of what we did with tehm.
