How to Study Quran with Family?

Each and every one of us must strive to know Allah and His Word better for our own hearts and that of our family's. Family is a very important element in nurturing faith. It is a parental responsibility to provide a wonderful opportunity to help their children build and strengthen their understanding of Qur'an.

While there are no definitive techniques or methods to family Quran Study that will apply to every family, here are some general principles that may help with older siblings and teenage kids:

1. Make a commitment once a week or everyday of the week to set aside specific and regular time to gather together as a family. Do not miss this scheduled time.
2. Keep the Quran study time and study passage reasonably short.
3. Have each member of the family recite one verse.
4. After the recitation, ask each family member to share their understanding of the verses.
5. Read the explanation of the verse in Ibn Kathir Tafseer or Listen to Br. Nouman Ali Khan.
6. In the end, as a family make an action plan to apply the verses in your personal lives.
7. Provide incentives for the members to be punctual and attentive with pizza dinners or gift cards.

If your family Quran Study time revolves around young children:

1. Read Qur'an stories to them or have them read the stories to you, then follow up with a discussion and an action plan.
Read the same story for two days, on the second day, ask the kids what they remember and how did they act upon the story.
2. Introduce them to play-dough or paper, markers and stickers to help them express their ideas.
3. Stimulate their senses creating Qur'an Story projects like  whale cake for the story of Yunus (a.s), a cardboard box for Nuh's (a.s) ark, or brown paper bag cave of Hira and paper cup to depict Yusuf (a.s)  in the well or paper plate to show baby Musa (a.s) in his basket. Teach the kids about animals in the  Qur'an like ants and honey bees by crafting them out on spoons and pipe cleaners. These projects will help them log the stories both in their minds and their hearts.
